Do I remember correctly that there is some restrictions on buying duty free (alcohol, etc) in Jo'berg if your going through to Windhoek?

We got changed to that route for our hunt. Do I have to pick up whisky in London before I board for Johannesburg?

Yes that was the case last trip I had thru J-berg, would not permit me to buy duty free booze or cigars in J-berg to take to Windhoek.

Not sure you will be able to carry on your duty free liquor to Windhoek thru J-ber either.

On the other hand, I have not had problems buying nice liquor in Windhoek on the last couple trips either.

Are we allowed to buy duty free in Windhoek on entering the country?

Some countries allow it and some don't.

I might be wrong about this but don't some airlines have a little brochure of duty free goods that you order whilst in flight and then pay for and collect when you land ? As I say I may be wrong as I rarely bother with duty free shopping.

The last leg of my trip is on SA so if I can't use duty free at OR Tambo, they probably won't let me order on the plane.

I don't usually use the duty free either that's why I don't know the rules. Trying to get my hunting mate a bottle of scotch for evening drinks.

You will need to buy it in London and then put it in checked baggage. Won’t be able to take it through as hand luggage.

Thanks, Since we'll be checking our luggage in at LAX through to Windhoek we won't be able to buy it until we get into Namibia.

Just speak to your PH, like I said, I have had pretty good success in Windhoek buying scotch. Bourbon was a little bit tougher, but if you've your PH a couple selections ahead of time, you shouldn't have to get anything in any duty free. The prices are not all that much better anyway.

FWIW if you are overnighting in Windhoek and happen to be going to Joe's Beerhouse there is a little plaza right behind Joes that has a liquor store that has a pretty good assortment at cheaper then I can buy at home pricing. (and a grocery, pharmacy. grocery sells some pretty good droewors/dried sausage and biltong) Google "Eros Shopping Plaza" or "Eros Bottle Store"

Namibia Customs Regulations
what can you bring into Namibia
All goods and gifts, acquired abroad or in any duty-free shop including goods bought duty free on an aircraft and/or ship are subject to payment of customs duty and Value Added Tax (VAT), when brought into Namibia.

As a concession however, travellers may qualify for the following:

Certain duty-free allowances
A flat rate assessment; on goods brought into Namibia as accompanied baggage.
Duty free allowance:

400 Cigarettes (enough to keep you coughing for a few days!)
50 Cigars 50
250 grams of cigarette or pipe tobacco
2 litres wine
1 litre spirits or other alcoholic beverage
50ml Perfume
250ml Toilet water
Persons under 18 are not entitled to tobacco and/or drinks allowances.
New or used goods to the value of N$ 1250.
