Read this in SCI "In The Crosshairs"

e European Union Commission recently released a new air-travel security regulation which, in part, prohibits the carriage of ammunition in checked baggage. This new regulation could make it very difficult for hunters to leave Europe with ammunition and might even cause problems for travelers transiting through Europe with ammunition, on their way to non-European destinations. Individual EU countries have the ability to opt out of the regulation, and SCI is working to encourage as many countries as possible to do so in their national air safety rules. SCI is also working to clarify whether the regulation will affect hunters who must fly through Europe, such as those who simply change planes in a European airport. Keep watching Crosshairs for further developments on this issue, including details on any country that confirms that it plans to exempt itself from this regulation. This regulation goes into effect on April 29, so anyone travelling with ammunition through Europe after that date needs to contact the airline to make sure that there will not be any issues. It's all been sorted. Relax. Carriage of sporting firearms continues as normal. BUT...always check with your own airlines because they also make their own rules.
If it was possible to attach a document to my post i could add an official reply I have to this question

Agree with Bwana1. People may say 'relax, it's been sorted out'...but the draft regulation is VERY recent and if you read it, the language in part 5B is quite clear.

Ammunition in checked (I see no reference to 'sporting ammunition') is PROHIBITED--and coincidentally is the first item listed.

I see reference in 5.4.2 (a/b--listed below) that MAY leave a loophole but it's quite vague as to who 'appropriate authority is' and what 'applicable safety rules' are.

5.4 PROHIBITED ARTICLES 5.4.1 Passengers shall not be permitted to carry in their hold baggage the articles listed in Attachment 5-B.

5.4.2 An exemption to point 5.4.1 may be granted on condition that:
(a) the appropriate authority has national rules permitting carriage of the article; and
(b) the applicable safety rules are complied with.
5.4.3 Passengers shall be informed of the prohibited articles listed in Attachment 5-B before check-in is completed."

"ATTACHMENT 5-B" HOLD BAGGAGE LIST OF PROHIBITED ARTICLES"

Passengers are not permitted to carry the following articles in their hold baggage: explosives and incendiary substances and devices — explosives and incendiary substances and devices capable of being used to cause serious injury or to pose a threat to the safety of aircraft, including:

— ammunition,
— blasting caps,
— detonators and fuses,
— mines, grenades and other explosive military stores,
— fireworks and other pyrotechnics,
— smoke-generating canisters and smoke-generating cartridges,
— dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives.
