When going to Africa on safari what type of luggage are people using ? Hard case, soft case, luggage with wheels ? What brands are you using that is light weight and tough. Thanks for the information.

Tom,

The Pelican 1640 suitcase is basically bullet and theft proof.

Use a hard sided case with no zipper. Nothing stops theft but they usually go for the easier to open cases. I use a Delsey suitcase with a piano hinge on one side and two hard clasps on the other.

It has over a million air miles on it, with over 60 overseas trips and a couple of hundred domestic flights and it's still perfect.

Seahorse brand, a lot like the Pelican, but less costly.

Travel all over the place.

Use a variety of luggage.

Never had any problems except in South Africa!

Now I avoid that place if I can.

Johannesburg airport should avoided at any cost!

Tuff Pak for rifles. Or Pelican case - both work.
Soft sides for clothes.
If RSA, carry it all on the plane.
Take optics in your carry ons.

Do not take anything valuable or sentimental.

I've always used a RedOX duffel and never had a problem, but something to think about. Nothing in my duffel that anyone would want. Anything of value is in the rifle case or my carryon.

+1 on everything valuable in carry-on!

Cabelas duffel as my carry-on and checked bag, you can cram them into tight spaces in Cruiser bed or charter plane.

The one point nobody has brought up is are you planning on any small bush plane charters. Sometimes it is better to take a smaller duffle that fits better on a bush plane. In regards to rifles, I moved to a breakdown rifle in a small Americase several years ago and wouldn't go back to a long gun case unless absolutely necessary. The Americas fits in the bottom of my wheeled duffle and nobody knows you are traveling with a rifle.

I had a zippered bag done over at Jo’berg OT on my way from Dar to Tete. Only time. Guess it was the ballpoint pen trick?

Qantas broke a hard case I just bought when living in a Beijing, but at least it wasn’t opened.
