Transferring through JNB and switching airlines
Will be travelling to Namibia relatively soon and one option is to go through Jo-berg but I might have to switch carriers so would have to claim my luggage and re-check. I won't be hauling a rifle or anything this time so wondering how big a pain in the keister and ball park length of time needed to claim luggage and re-check with the new airline??

Thanks.

You should be able to check it all the way through. You're not overnighting in J'burg are you?

Jorge400 is correct. I do it all the time.

Yep, that was what I thought, but the travel agent stuck some doubt in my mind. No overnights so should be no worries...right?! Cool

As long as you have enough time between flights it should be no problem.

The last 2 years, I have flown Delta to Johannesburg. I landed, went through international transit for my boarding pass and had time to kill before I caught my flight to Harare. I have done this many times including to Namibia several years ago.

The only way I overnight in Johannesburg is to see some of my friends.

Kernel - Why not just bypass JB altogether and go Frankfurt straight to Namibia? I would never even consider flying through JB if Namibia was my destination.

I believe the cost is twice the amount. At least it was, when I checked last year.

chuck - If you are referring to my post on Frank to Wind you must be checking with the wrong source for airfares. Two years ago, my flight was actually a bit cheaper through Frank than going to JB and back to Wind. Confused

Even if it were a tad bit more would be worth it to not be anywhere near JB.

the real hassle facter to me when transfering through Joberg is when you leave the states, you could not get your boarding pass for the next flight until you get to Joberg, something about they can not issue boarding passes up to X number of hours before departure so everyone is trying to get their boarding passes and very few agents to assist. Then you must go through security again to reach the connecting flights. If the flight is late at all,,,, which SAA seems to always be late,, you better have at least 3 hours or be ready to run to catch your flight

you can make more money, you can not make more time
