Just yesterday I ordered a Pelican 1510 LOC.
It should be here in a few days. I will report what I think about it then.

I have a trip to Germany at the end of the month I will also report how I like it when I get back.

My thoughts are it is very secure enroute and also when left in the hotel/motel.
Also when vehicle traveling it can be cabeled securely inside the vehicle.

The 1510s are really nice and bulletproof, but, at over 13#, a pig as far as weight is concerned. Esp for airlines that limit carryon weight to 10kg. You eat up over half your allowance with just the empty case!!!

+4 on the Pelican/Storm.

4x to Africa no issues.

25+ to other international destinations - No issues. Though as stated heavy. Must say mine's getting a bit worn. Just starting to look good.

Looks like a great carry-on for stateside travel, but is there enough capacity for your one and only checked bag on a safari, considering the ammo hard case? Doesn't seem like it. I make my hunting backpack do double duty as my carryon.

Welcome thoughts. I've always traveled with a duffel in addition to my gun case, Red Oxx of late. Haven't had a problem, but then, I pack anything valuable (optics, cameras, etc.) in the carryon and I try not to go through Tambo.

Way too big for a carry on. For checked baggage only. Plenty of room. It holds more than my duffel I have always carried. I will post more once I get back from Zim in May on how I liked it in use.

Right now I am worrying about the new firearm regs! Eeker

We have used the Orvis Battenkill too without incident - but not to Africa. I had planned on taking it until I was reading here where the Vic Falls trips got pilfered. Between this and the new gun permits it is enough to make me say bad words.

I wouldn't mind to add some of this in - but it looks as puncture prone as the Orvis gear with the zippers. Is it indeed more vandal proof?

If it has zippers it is prone to being opened. A ballpoint pen and 2 seconds is all it takes. The only zipper that is more tamper resistant is the
PacSafe as Duckear pointed out. Seems to keep the savages confused.

My Orvis gear only has the one big zipper and it is covered by a flap .

They can get the flap open if they have enough time of course.

I can put the TSA combination locking straps around it.

No Lane I have not. Yet.

I still need a 4457s on my rifle I am taking plus a new one on one I may take for my wife too.

I had pretty much planned on taking the Orvis luggage as my son took off with some of the Filson , plus I believe my big Filson duffel is too big by their new size rules in overall inches.

But now I am looking at the Samsonite too. I will probably have some combination.

This is starting to get a little aggravating. Theft has always been there. That Zero case stopped any of that. Then TSA. Now more theft. Then more gun problems. I bantered back and forth a year ago about Argentina vs Africa - and now they are both making me shake my head.

If it was just me and you then it wouldn't be a big deal. But moving a family with wife and daughters along changes things some as we all know.

We are going if I have to pay extra fees and extra fees again. But I can't say how many more times.

We are going up to Vic Falls so now I am looking at just repacking what we need for that portion alone.

Does anybody care to offer up any opinions of the newest Filson softs versus the same in Orvis bags?

No problem. Someone has to try and keep up the male reputation.

I would also suggest getting a pink or red hard case . . . maybe put a layer of thongs on top . . . that way if they open the case they think it is Opal's case and not Opus' case. Just here to help.

. . . or just avoid Jo'burg . . .

I have not checked bags on my last 3 trips as I take a bare minimum. If taking gun/ammo, then you will be checking bags. I use the cheapest hard side I can, then junk it after a couple of trips.

Filson and Orvis are great bags, but not really needed for clothes. You get your stuff washed daily and you need two sets of clothes. That all fits in a carry on. I then leave my clothes behind as they are usually shot by the time the hunt is over.

I am going to get a few and carry them with in my regular bag.

Can use it as a emergency bag.

Issue i have had with airlines is they have become really strict in weight and fees. On a flight to hk - aa allowed two bags. I had only one but was over weight by 5 pounds. They wanted $100. Glad i had my filson carry on to move some jeans into.

Need update recomendations for checked luggage --- I need to buy a new one for the wife's first trip to Africa. We will be doing the usual trip with overnight in Joberg and then on into camp after a stop at Vic Falls. Thus the question as to the above mentioned Samsonite with TSA style locks -- still recommended for??

OMG!-- my bow is "pull-push feed" - how dreadfully embarrasing!!!!!

Yes, as to Samsonite's Hard sided luggage (i.e. NO ZIPPERS).

Rather than drop $300 to $500 on brand new hardsided luggage, go to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill Industries resale shop. Buy a used and abused hardside Samsonite suitcase, preferably WITHOUT operational keys (they’re cheaper without keys) I paid $7 or $8 for my last one. Next go to a Home Depot and buy a hasp set for less than $2.00 for a pair. Bring the beater suitcase home and rip out the cloth lining and the divider. Drill holes to hold the hasps and secure the hasps with bolts. Crazy Glue the bolts from the inside so they can’t be unfastened. Buy several TSA locks to secure the hasps. For less than $10, you’ve got an inpregnible suitcase that no self respecting native thief will even consider pilfering.

I 100% agree with UEG and Bud. Anything with a zipper on it can be opened in a flash. That flap over the zipper on the Filson's does nothing. The leather straps holding the flap on mine ripped off on the first trip.

You can find discounted Samsonite F'Lite bags by google. I bought a 31" bag today for a whopping $99.00!
I have one already that I have been horribly hard on and it was time to replace it. I made up a coated cable to put through the handle and down through one of the holes in the bottom leg and padlock it so even if they did get into it (which they haven't) they can't open it.

Lots of 31" on sale because they are oversize. I have used a 31" the last few years.I bought a 28" last year. The Gorillas at the Airport busted a wheel off so I replaced it with one off of the 31".

I have used the samsonite flite bags.

They last around 5-7 international trips for me. I have had wheels come off and the center latch break.

Overall it is a good bag but it needs to be replaced over time. They make good tips for staff in camp.

Normally not an issue in Africa for hunting trips as there is space in outfitters truck. But if you are traveling elsewhere - 2 of these bags are nearly impossible to fit in a taxi cab trunk.

I have gone to one samsonite flite and a rei roller duffel bag.

Frankly, Samsonite are way over priced for what they are.

I have had wheels come off and locks breaking.

For carry on I do use Samsonite, because they are light.

But, they never last with me as they seem to develop feet and walk away from here, as they get borrowed and never come back!
