Ammo quantity on return trip
How on earth are you supposed to put down on your firearms permit how much ammo you will have left after your hunt? I am flying back through Sweden from Africa (yes, I know not the most ideal route, but I had other reasons) and then again switching planes in Amsterdam. The Swdeish permit, and I think the Amsterdam permit also, require you to list ammo quantity.

What do you guys do? Leave left over ammo?

Technically it's illegal to leave ammo behind in most African countries so better to 'shoot it off' if you don't want to take it home with you. Wink

I always seem to have "expended" all my ammo during my hunt. Makes life easier on the return.

The PH's in Africa, regardless of the country, are very appreciative of any ammo that you can spare when you leave the country. If they don't have that caliber, they know someone that does. I always seem to be a bad shot and don't have any ammo when I return to the US

Ethiopian Airlines wouldn't let me take any ammo home - had to leave it all in Tanzania. Cost me ~$600.00. AIU

If I have not loaded something goofy that I am afraid of others firing in their rifle I always leave what I have behind.

Guys, sometimes a little bit of reading between the lines helps........ and it certainly would in this particular thread. Wink

I let my PH and trackers shoot up all our remaining ammo the last morning. It was great fun and something the trackers rarely, if ever, get to do.

I have never had to fill out a firearms permit in any country that asked how much ammo I would have left over after safari, and quite frankly, any response on a form ahead of time would be nothing short of pure speculation. I guess it would be best to shoot it all up. Shakari is right about technically leaving ammo and the law-I was told that very same thing years ago by the late Louis Bekker of Afton House. Big Grin

...maybe your scope got out of alignment had you had to rezero? Wink

My action screws came loose and I really did have to rezero.

Shakari,

I'm pretty meticulous about my zeros. I like to sight in every couple of days just to make sure I haven't been bumped off. With the spare scope, and big bore ammunition, I've always worried about getting enough ammo to Africa within airline limits and I've seldom had much if any left over.

I did, however, make the mistake of leaving ALL of my remaining ammo with my ph. Went to the fishing camp for 3 nights and had lions in camp all 3 nights. Doors were Dutch doors and they didn't lock. Won't make that mistake again. I will have some backup ammo left that I can leave with the camp staff for my PH.
