What constitutes a secure ammunition case

safarihunterWhat constitutes a secure ammunition case
I can’t find any definition of a secure ammunition case
I have several substantial plastic pistol cases that can accept padlocks and will fit my ammunition. Would these qualify?
I am aware of the Pelican style cases however they are quite bulky for my luggage

I use an aluminium case, similar to to my aluminium rifle case.
They ship individually not inside any luggage.

Terry BlauwkampI use Pelican Camera cases.
Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.
I used a cheap metal "cash box" with a very cheap key lock on the hasp. It was very light weight and was never questioned. However, when some of the airlines changed their policy to require the ammo case be checked as a separate piece of luggage I switched to a Pelican case as the metal box was not very secure and would probably be destroyed by the baggage handlers.

K EvansI use MTM Dry Boxes, got a green one and a blaze orange one, put small TSA lock on them and never had a problem. The blaze orange one is easily spotted at locations where ammo is required to ship separately.

Baker458I use plastic dry boxes with TSA lock as well. Gives you a little extra room for gun cleaning stuff and other odds & ends.

AtkinsonActually all thats required (unless the practice has changed) is any ammo is to go in seperated boxes and factory cardboard boxes are fine in check on luggage..Best to check with your specific airlines as its a changing thang!

Leaving the US the carriers allow it in your checked bag and if checked all the way thru to your final destination, you are good.
Departing from Africa or Europe in country or back to the US they will require it to be checked as a separate piece of luggage but it does not count against your checked bags count..
For example, my ammo was in my checked bag leaving Dulles on Turkish but since I retrieved my luggage at Joberg to hang out for a couple days before going on to Botswana, when I checked in at Joberg to fly to Botswana, I had to check my ammo separately...
