I am sure this question has been asked many times, but for travel on SAA what kind of a closed locked box to I need to put in my checked baggage? I have a cash box with a built in combination lock. It worked in 2010 but will it still work this year.

Should work just fine.

I just used the same thing a month ago.

I had no problems in September 2012 with a similar box.
I use a metal cash box with a hasp & TSA lock in my checked luggage.

I use a cash box with the included key. Both trips this year on the way there they broke it and tapped it back up. Did not care. They are $10 on amazon.....

The question becomes this.

What will you do if your ammo box separated from your luggage and is tagged and shipped as a separate piece of luggage for you.

Are you able to have a name tag and airline tag attached to it? That is the question you need to answer.

I have had SAA ask me to remove my ammo case to weigh it in Joberg, then after re checking for my next flight and my ammo case was now on it own and not in my travel bag. So if that happens will your ammo case in your mind work for you.

I always tag my Pelican ammo box in my checked baggage with one of my own airline identification tags. It stays on there all of the time. That way, you are prepared for any contingency. I would assume that the airlines will tag it with its own baggage tag, as they are not just going to throw it on some flight without it.

I used a small Pelican case for mine, and had an extra small duffel type bag available to put them in if they had to be seperated from the checked bag they were in. Came in handy in Frankfort when they wanted it out of my checked bag, also allowed the customs guys to take the guns and ammo direct to the plane, rather than have to take it back to the Air Namibia counter to be tagged. Just got an extra tag at the counter when I checked the rest of the bags, one tag for rifles, one for ammo.

Pelican case cost more, but is indestructable, and not very heavy. Kept extra locks in bag also, came in handy, as someone cut off locks in transit.

I love Pelican cases. I have 6 different Pelicans. However, the South African Police also like them. When transiting SA, they stole my Pelican out of my bag. Wrote me a note saying that they took it because I did not have a gun license. I was not collecting my bag, just transiting. They let my gun go on through to Zambia.

Cash box and combo worked for me in May with multiple in country flights.

The problem with a cash box is it looks like a cash box & is rather an open invitation to the less than bright thieving baggage handlers who just might swipe it in the hope it might contain cash.

For the reasons Wendell stated I use and recommend Pelican cases. You can buy less expensive locking boxes for your ammo but they may not withstand the rough handling a Pelican case will.

Pull the lining loose from the suitcase and
put a bunch of clear DAP caulking between the box and outter cover. That way it'll become part of the bag itself and quite hard to remove.
sure beat screws from the bottom.

SAA request ammo packed separately on most of my trips over so Its best that it is pack large and visible.

Once, as a young engineer, my mentor was a salty Cajun, "Eddie". We had yankee visitor, and one of my erstwhile turbine mechanics ran over the visitors briefcase and destroyed it. The visitor attempted to expense his briefcase, but the bean counters denied it. The idea of running over a Pelican made me think of that story, and made me think of my long passed friend Eddie. And smiled.

Not sure where OP is from, but saw Academy in Houston had small Pelican like mine, on sale for $39.00, that is a good deal.

Air Botswana made me check my Pelican separately from my luggage.

No problem in my bag from ATL to JNB
Spent the night.
Checking from JNB to MUB, they tagged it separately and it went by itself.


For guys that like ammo or metal boxes, these seem pretty cool if you can rig up a lock for it.

The Pelican 1300 seems to be about perfect for 5 boxes of ammo and will fit in check in or can be sent separate. With TSA locks its is pretty handy.
