Their website still has this:
'Effective with tickets purchased on/after September 24, 2007, American Airlines will no longer accept firearms in checked baggage to/from the United Kingdom (except for military/government personnel with proper documentation)."

About two months ago, my hunting partner was on for hours with the AA folks and BA folks to find out what was up with traveling with firearms. All looked good and we got ticketed. Then a few days later, they called back saying they wouldn't do firearms to the UK and that they'd be confiscated. After several hours later, we had flights set up to go through Madrid and with Iberia to JNB. If we weren't going on airline miles, we'd have booked with Delta.
