pelican 1200 for 5 boxes of 375 Swift A frames?
pelican 1200 for 5 boxes of 375 Swift A frames?
I have a pelican 1400 right now and I plan on taking 5 boxes of 300 gr 375HH Remington A frames. With the 1400 case I am over my limit in weight and want to see if 5 boxes will fit into a 1200 case. From my measurements it is a tight fit and would be right on the line. Has anyone tried to fit 5 boxes in a 1200 case?

DuckearI am 99% sure they will if you use plastic slip top boxes instead of factory boxes. Federal boxes are too big. Remington factory boxes may work.

I have a pelican 1200 with no foam lining. I just checked and five boxes of loaded 375 HH fit easily. These are not factory boxes but are plastic "reloaded" shell types of boxes. I am not sure about factory boxes.

Nube, what's the need for 100 rounds on a safari? Either you're staying a long time, doing some culling on a ranch, or leaving some for the PH? That's a lot of ammunition for a typical safari.

LionHunterWAY TOO MUCH AMMO. I cannot imagine a practical scenario wherein a North American hunter would need that many rounds of .375, since you cannot be culling buff, ele or hippo. If you are going on a PG cull hunt, you're using the wrong caliber, IMO.

Ya that is a lot of ammo for one person but my buddy is comming and he lives in Mexico. I am taking his guns and ammo as well since I have his stuff in Canada here at my house. I figure 50 rounds a piece is about right. That way if we have a scope out we can have enough to get by and who knows, I have heard some rodeo stories with buffalo sucking up a few rounds as well. I would feel better taking my max that I can.
I just found another box I might order that has more room and less weight and way less cost than a pelican. Anyone try these out?

How many guns are you expecting to take? Most airlines restrict the number of firearms any one passenger can transport; 2 or 3 is the norm. Sounds like you might need to do some research with your airlines firearms & ammo policy.

As Mark said I booked through him with Zambezi hunters with 2 other friends of mine. I figured I had hassled him with enough questions and problems and wanted to give him a break for a while
He has been more than helpfull through this whole thing and appreciate his help.
Lionhunter, I am not sure if I came across wrong and it sounds like i am taking a whole arsenal of weapons? I will have 2 Blaser R93's in 375HH. My one buddy will have one gun and I will have the other. 2 rifles and 50 rounds a piece is what I think is pretty good and we should be fine with that. I had hopes to take my 300 win for the leapard and the 375 for the rest of the hunt but since my friend lives in Mexico it is easier if I take his rifle as well so I left the 300 win at home and will just shoot everything with the 375.
I just shot them and they do just over 1" with Swift A frames and figure we can shoot everything with those and feel confident with that.
Gun applications are in. Need to shoot the guns a few more times and start packing the bags. Hopefully Will Parks didn't wear Thierry out this past couple weeks and I am ready to rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HuntingbigunCabelas has a nice aluminuim ammo box that holds 5 boxes little smaller than the pelican have a good hunt and make sure put a report waiting on them to get back with me for a ele, the save is sold out for 2 years
I used franklin plastic boxes for my reloads
Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6

Thanks larry. i just ordered a new box and it is lighter. i will see what the weight it after i get it together.
Has anyone had the experience of actually being overweight with their ammo? What happns then? Do they just take a box of ammo out to get to the weight limit or do they confiscate the whole thing?
I've also recently acquired a Pelican 1200 for that purpose. The MTM Boxes fit if you choose the smaller 50 round ones (will need to check the model if you need it; you can fit 2 of them), or the 22 round ones.

Yes.
It occurred when we had two hunters ammunition in one container (to save paperwork, etc.). Some ammunition had to be removed to get under weight.
Pelican 1200 weighed in at 1.2Kg, empty.
Next week I'm taking a Pelican 1200 with 60 rounds of 404 Jeffery and coming just under the 5kg limit (4.9kg). There may be varmints in Tanzania.
Whatever you're taking, there are some airports/airlines that do actually weigh it.

LHowellAs I have never had my ammo weighed, I may be off the mark here, but, I do not believe the weight of the Pelican [or any other] case will or should count in your 11lbs/5kg limit? The actual cartidges and their original packaging material will count, I guess. But surely not an airline imposed case?
When asked how much ammo, I have always answered " Exactly, 11 lbs, 5 kilos". Never has been a question.

The published SAA policies (just reviewed again) clearly state 5 Kg of ammo. How these rules are applied may be another matter all together given the education and attitudes of those encountered at check in.

Based on the above I bought a Pelican 1200. I'm planning on going to Tanz and taking two boxes of ammo for each of my .416 Rigby and .338 Rum. 4 boxes (which are well under the weigh limit) won't fit in it. Too small. Ugh! I have a cabela's box that I have used in the past, which is a great size, but for some reason can't be locked with a padlock (major design flaw), but looks like I'm taking it again. Beware the 1200 is simply not big enough if you want to take 40 rounds for each gun.

Oday450The number of boxes fitting in the 1200 will depend on caliber and cartridge boxes used. I have fit 3 plastic boxes of 375 H&H & 3 of 30-06 when foam was removed. I have also loaded it with 3 boxes of 416 Rem Mag & 2 of 375 H&H. There's no problem at all with 2 boxes of any of the above with the outside foam layers.
