Two rifles of the same caliber

ledvmTwo rifles of the same caliber
I have been thinking of taking 2 .375 H&H rifles with me to Africa. One with a scope and one with a red-dot sight.
Outfitters in Zim I know well...say it is no problem there.
Why do we hear that we are not allowed to do this? Is it SA that is the problem?

SaeedYes.
I have been taking two identical rifles to both Zimbabwe and Tanzania for many years.
No problems at all.
South Africa seems to have a knack of annoying hunters.

WR500Yes
My understanding is that no one person can bring in 2guns of the same caliber.
Stupid rule but it is what it is!

ledvmMy question is: who’s rule is it? Zimbabwe outfitters say it is not a problem in Zimbabwe. Is it RSA that is the problem?

WR500Yes it’s South Africa’s policy. If you are only transiting Jberg then you should be ok.
If overnighting and doing the SAPS 520 you will be screwed!

MARK H. YOUNGLane,
You just need a letter from the safari operator explaining why you need the other rifle. Gracy Travel or TWG can assist. Without the letter you will be in hot water if you pick up your guns and kit in JNB.

K EvansLane:
It can be done but I believe the temporary permit has to come fom the Central Registry in Pretoria, not from the SAPS office at JNB.
From SAPS:
An application for more than one firearm of the same calibre
The Registrar may in good cause shown, issue a permit in respect of more than one firearm per calibre to a person who will be using the firearms for the under mentioned purpose:
to a foreign visitor for the purpose of hunting
to a foreign visitor to display the firearm and ammunition at a trade show or collectors show or to display firearms or ammunition at a sport of hunting trade show.
To a foreign visitor to participate in a competitive sport shooting event organised by recognised business, hunting, sport-shooting or collectors organisation.

ledvmThanks for that Karl.
All I want to do is get to Zimbabwe with my 2 .375 H&H rifles. One set up with lighted reticle scope and one set up with a Trijicon RM06 red-dot sight for close and follow-up work.
Apparently it is no problem in Zimbabwe and if checked through...shouldn’t pose a problem.
That said...Debbie has gotten me liking this overnighting in Joberg at City Lodge and leaving fresh to Vic Falls the following morning. This seems a lot of hassle just to spend 12 hours in Joberg. Christy at Gracy Travel is researching for me and will report.

Lane,
My wife and I do this each time we transit Johannesburg, not because we want to, it's really our only option. The City Lodge is a nice hotel with a good restaurant, and breakfast is included in the cost of the room. If you want something nicer the Intercontinental is right there at the airport and they have an outstanding restaurant. If you do this get the Meet and Greet service, they get you through the customs line quickly, your guns are a breeze and then they escort you to your room. The next morning Bruce will walk you right back through and get you checked in. The chance for a shower and a good nights sleep after a long flight is nice, and you never really leave the airport. And don't worry about being kept awake all night my the sounds of aircraft, the airport is basically dead after about 8 P.M.

MARK H. YOUNGLane,
I must eat crow. I got a little confused in my old age. It seems there is no practical way to take two rifles of the same caliber through RSA If you are gathering your guns and kit there unless you have a traveling companion with a 4457 indicating the 2nd rifle is theirs.

No need to eat crow, there is a practical way to bring two of the same caliber...just have to get the permit thru the central registrar and not the SAPS office at point of entry. I copied and pasted the verbiage from SAPS in an earlier post. Takes a bit more time but can be done, Air 2000 (and other permitting services can handle).

Hi Karl,
The word from Gracy Travel is that this information is outdated and may not apply any longer.
I am just relaying what I was told.
Do you know anyone who has accomplished this in the last year?
Further...would it even apply to someone in transit? IE: not hunting in RSA...just overnighting?

K EvansLane,
We are currently in Joburg, just flew in from Beira, Moz. Two other couples are catching flights later tonight and SAA Airlink checked their bags thru to DFW...NO SAPS. We are staying a bit longer so I had to do the SAPS thing. All of the rifle cases came to the police and they said they would have them placed in the correct flight, I specifically asked about that (but their security company had to go on the plane to find my and another guy’s rifles. Had ended up being cargo, or so they said. Good luck!

ledvmHi Karl,
This is what I was told by Gracy’s guy in RSA.
“It is currently not possible to get a temporary or in-transit firearm permit for 2xsame calibre at the central firearms register. We have asked for clarification for clients that are in-transit to other countries but still waiting on an answer. I was told to call again tomorrow and will let you know if there is any change.”

Who knows what the “current” policy really is. After all it is Africa. Good luck on your hunt.

DCS MemberRSA firearms import laws are ridiculous. I see no point in this restriction. I’m sure they would ok it if they charged an extra fee like SAA is now doing.
I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills.
