SniperEmirates and guns
Looking at Emirates as an option for next year. How much time do I need to get the guns through Dubai and onto JNB? Looks like there is a two hour layover or a 6-8 hr layover.

www.tgsafari.co.za 2 hours is awfully tight going over. I have a 2 hour, 40 minute layover with guns, going through Dubai and that's about the least I'm comfortable with, as well as the fact that it's on my way back home.

SniperThank you Saeed, I am looking forward to seeing a little bit of your part of the world. Accurate Reloading has been part of my safari experience since the very beginning several years ago. I made my first trip in 2006 and I think this will be my 11th safari!

www.tgsafari.co.za Flew Emirates on my last trip-GREAT experience (thank you, Saeed!). However, EVERYBODY goes through security BOTH ways (at least on my trip) and having firearms adds time, so don't cut yourself too close!

Probably a good decision. Have a wonderful time. Emirates' planes are awfully nice, clean and have a great entertainment system.

RidgemanI regularly fly Emirates via Dubai thru to Lusaka and the typical layover is only a few hours. My guns are tagged straight thru so never experience any in/out hassles at Dubai. Emirates have never, to date, created any problems.
Only my carry on bag is inspected when in transit.

Glad to hear this.
Not related to firearms, but a few days ago I flew to Stockholm on Emirates.
We must have arrived just after a Turkish flight, as the immigration hall was packed, and it took over an hour to get through.
Someone who was knew to Stockholm asked me what might happen to his bags, as we were quite late to pick them up.
I told him the airport is very small, and all he has to do just look for his bags beside the belt.
Walking to the luggage collection area, I got myself a trolly and went looking for my bags.
Then I saw a trolly standing in the corner with my two bags on it!!?
Collected and ready to go.
May be I was traveling First Class, and the bags had PRIORITY tags on them.
Still, that was an indication of a caring ground staff.
I sent a note to Emirates passenger services to thank the ground staff in Atlanta airport, as I was not able to find anyone to express my appreciation to personally.

30.06kingI took my first Emirates flights very recently. Flew Auckland / Dubai/ Harare ( via Lusaka ) and the same route on return to arrive back in NZ earlier this week. Part of my luggage was Firearms and all luggage was checked through to final destinations both ways. I had Emirates pre-approval for Firearms carriage. Unlike Saeed peasants like me fly economy but I have to say everything about Emirates and the flight was straightforward, professional and enjoyable. At the Dubai boarding gate on the homeward leg the boarding pass scanner obviously raised an alert about the Firearms as I was taken aside for a supervisor to question me. He was busy noting some calibres but noticed I had the pre-approval then smiled, relaxed and waved me through. I was kinda expecting a rodeo at the Harare check in but actually it was the most efficient step of the whole trip.
I didn't realise until we landed but this was the signage on the A380 that delivered me to Auckland !

If you are brave enough, you could try Bloody Awful Airlines, they still fly 747.
Probably converted from cargo flights!
I leave on 8/31 on Emirates to Harare and have an overnight in Dubai included as part of the ticket. Guns are tagged through.

Texas Blue DevilWe just returned from Zambia (Kafue) today with Emirates. We had a 3 hour layover on the return flight, and our guns made it back fine.

Business Class in the A380 was very nice. We had that on the flights between Houston and Dubai.
For the flights between Dubai and Lusaka, they had 777-300's. The 777's were nice, but not as nice as the A380's.

Spot on. I added an extra flight onto my itinerary (Dallas to Houston) just so I could fly on the A380 instead of the 777 to Dubai. It was totally worth the extra headache re-checking everything (firearms included) and changing terminals. The A380 business class is that good.

I've NEVER slept that much on an airplane.

DCS MemberI assume you get priority boarding up front, but how long is the boarding and disembarking due to the double decker? I heard some airports would modify to have to jetways.
Please excuse my ignorance about the A380, but I’ve never even seen one despite the fact that I’m in and out of some of the biggest and busiest airports in the US (DFW, Atlanta, Miami, etc.) many times a year in addition to others overseas.
Aviation just fascinated me.

First and Business Class do get priority boarding and disembarking.
Last January we were coming from Switzerland on the 380.
We were in First Class, and a friends son was traveling on the same flight in economy.
He asked if we could drive him home in DUBAI.
I asked EMIRATES if he could join us in the First Class lounge, and they arranged it for us.
On the flight, I asked the purser if the boy could disembark with us, instead of waiting for the Economy passengers.
And with the usual Emirates service, about an hour before we landed, he brought the young man up into First Class and put him in an empty seat.
We left the plane together.
And we drove him home.

SniperMy son and I will be in economy. I have only ever flown economy but I feel confident Emirates economy will be way better than the same on SAA and Delta that I have flown in the past.

BearCountry953I sent in the online form, with requested documents for my transfer in Dubai. In 48 hours it was back and approved and I don't leave for 6 weeks.
I have never had an issue with Emirates.

FMCEmirates is all that has been mentioned. I'll always try to use them for all future oversees travels.
Flew First. No better way to return home from a successful hunt than Dom and caviar......

DLSI just landed in Lusaka today via Emirates from San Francisco to Dubai, 36 hour layover and then on to Lusaka. Due to my late arrival for my flight, my guns did not make it onto the flight. Emirates baggage services were on the ball though, and when I got off my flight today, my bags were sitting there waiting for me when I cleared Customs.
Very pleased with Emirates, all the way around. Just wish I’d have stayed longer in Dubai, it’s a really interesting place.

SniperGood report. Also glad to hear you didnt contract any ailments. My flight leaves Feb 28th so I am guessing I need to contact Emirates in December or first of January for firearms notification and approval?

FMCI forgot.....Your luggage is flagged in their system. When making the transfer in Dubai they will see a prompt on their screen and you'll be asked to step aside as they will physically call in to the baggage carriers to load the case.
I recommend you go early, before they announce boarding and tell them you are travelling with guns & ammo as it will take 5 mins or so before they will allow you to board. It helps to know which baggage ticket is the gun case as they will ask, so ensure the ticketing agent marks it for you.

jaegerfrankJust returned from the AR group hunt in Zambia. Frankfurt-Dubai-Lusaka-Dubai- Frankfurt. Only good things to say about Emirates, gun handling very professional, clearly recommended.

Once you submit the form and get approval you will be all set. When you arrive at the airport an agent will be expecting you. They take handling firearms very seriously. We even spent a few days in Dubai and they stored them at the Police station and got them on our flight no problem.
