Travelling with Tuffpak

Has anyone traveled with 2 full sized Tuffpaks. I'm going to SA this summer, and taking my son (young). I was wondering if I could take 2 tuffpacks, to separate my rifles and be able to lock all our stuff in the cases. I could also take my much more protective but bulkier soft cases, as 2 of them don't fit well in the tuffpak. I'll be traveling United and SAA. Thanks, Rich.

I have traveled with two Tuff Paks on the last three safaris.

It seems to make sense to me because with rifles in separate Tuff Paks you have a good chance that at least one of them will arrive in one piece.

I put the ammo for each rifle in the Tuff Pak that has the rifle it goes with.

I did the exact same thing when I went to Namibia last July.I took two tuff paks with a complete Bow setup in each as well as all my clothes it worked out great.

On our last Safari to Zim we had 3 Tuff-Paks and a Filson rolling suffel as checked baggage.

Two full size and one takedown Tuff-Pack.

Good, sounds like the 2 tuffpak plan will work. Can a person take 2 rifles and a shotgun into South Africa.

Yes, on that last trip my wife and I each took 2 rifles and a drilling.

Total 6 long guns.

So if you take only 2 tuffpaks, with rifles and ammo split in each one, HOW can you meet legal flying requirements on SAA which won't allow any ammo in the case containing the rifle??

Bisonhunter- haven't heard that rule with SAA. I've flown on SAA to AFrica on 3 different ocassions with ammo and rifles together without any probelm. If you go to their website, you will see that it is allowed.

Here's the text from the SAA web site. For several months discussions on the forum have stated that ammo and firearms cannot be packed together.

"Ammunition must be separated from weapons and may be packed within checked luggage, but must be properly secured in an ammunition case or solid box. No ammunition may be packed loosely in checked baggage or within the same case as firearms.

We strongly recommend that ammunition be packed in lockable cases, which can be handed in as loose items at the firearm counters to avoid possible delays during checked baggage screening."

Now my question is: how did the weight thing work out for you. I loaded one of my rifles, ammo, and some clothing, but not even enough to fully secure the rilfe in place, and the thing was tippin the scales at 49.5 pounds.

So couldn't you just put the ammo box in the tuffpak? That's what I was going to do, even if I only take one tuffpak.

Some countries insist that ammo not be in gun case. be prepared to be flexible. In many cases you better have a second checked bag to put ammo in.

I will be using a locked double pistol case in checked baggage. In worst case, it could be removed and checked as a separate, although small, bag.

See this thread for another option, a Plano field box. It's larger and less easily lost although heavier than the pistol case.
