new Windhoek Hilton
Hello all, has anyone stayed at the Windhoek Hilton downtown, looks a bit more expensive than some but seems like a nice place in a good location for relaxing and doing a bit of eating/drinking & curio shopping. Any comments good or bad appreciated.

We stayed there before and after a hunt in Namibia in June/July 2011. The facility was excellent, service great although as you note pricier than some of the alternatives. The hotel has secure storage for firearms and we walked from the hotel to the downtown shopping area (about 2-3 blocks) with no problems whatsoever.

Next time in Namibia we'll definitely be staying there again.

How pricey is "pricier"?

When we stayed there it was about $200 total per night for three of us.

When I spend the night in Windhoek, I stay at the Onganga Lodge. It's less than $100, only 2.5 miles from Joe's Beer House, and right off the B-2 road to the airport.

Is the Kalahari Sands Hotel still around? That is where I stayed in 94'.

Thanks Bud, though it looks like their website is down so hard to get some details.

The Sands still seems to be there. I was original planning on staying at the Safari Court but my outfitter didn't speak very highly of it and suggested either looking at the smaller places like Onganga or the Hilton if wanting something larger.

Because I will be traveling solo and plan on spending a couple of days in Windhoek prior to the hunt to sight see, get some curio's and eat at Joe's I thought something larger and more centrally located like the Hilton would give me more options to keep me entertained.

Once again I appreciated everyone's advice,

Jim

JIM: You can reach Katrin at Onganga via her email: reservations@ongananga.com. They have free breakfasts, a nice little bar, walk-in vault for your guns, and are very hunter friendly. It's a 3.5 mile drive to Joe's Beer House, or a $60 Namibian (less than $8 US) taxi ride. Get to Joe's before 5:30 PM or you'll wait in line.

Onganga is a nice place to stay. Nice people. A bit out of town though.

Do you use Trip Advisor? It shows a single room at the Hilton in May at $170/night. It lists 20 hotels sorted by either rank or price.
