Delta, like most other airlines, wants you to burn as many miles as possible when you attempt to purchase tickets with miles. However, if your travel dates are somewhat flexible, you can find the best deal using their improved reward calendar. Just be shifting a few days, I was able to book business class from ATL to JNB for 205,000 miles and not 350,000 just by shifting a few days.
In the past you had to deal with a live agent and do the dance for awhile to get the best deal (hopefully). Now you can do it much easier online and verify the best deal.

HARDBALLERAlaska Airlines also has a very friendly web site. Looking up the calendar, I see that you can book business class ATL-JNB for 140k miles. Click on PLAN & BOOK tab at the top, check the box use miles, and check the box AWARD CALENDAR.
