Tambo Layover
My wife and I have an 8+ hour layover at Tambo on August 15th (from 10AM to 6:30PM). Short of getting a day room, are there any safe and reasonably priced activities in J.Berg??

No.

That said, there's plenty to see in the intentional terminal.

I'd rather french kiss a rattlesnake than go touring around Joburg again.
But then, I'm not much of a tourist anyway.

Joburg and tourism are oxymoronic.

I agree with Will's assessment that there is a lot of shopping and decent dining in the "International" terminal. I don't know if you have any club memberships but there are several private clubs for travelers available as well. From massages, to a couple of dining options, to shopping for curios or the latest fashion from the continent, it's all there...

The only safe way to go shopping in Joberg, that I know of, is to stay at the Afton House and stay an extra day, just for shopping.

The people at Afton can take you to a few places where you will be safe and can do some good shopping.

I have done this 3 times and it worked out great each time.

You can cet a day pass into one of these clubs, but they are not cheap. I was told when I went in April that you could get into one of them for about $20 US. Well, I checked out about four of them and the cheapest one was $120 US... not worth it to me for 6 hrs.

If you have an Amex Platinum card and/or have enrolled in the Priority Pass program, there are two lounges in the international terminal you will have access to. Also, if you are flying Delta and have an Amex Platinum, you might be able to get into the Air France lounge.

The international terminal there is very nice. Having a nice dinner, a few drinks, and shopping, it would be easier to kill 8 hours there than any airport in the US I can think of off the top of my head.

In the International Terminal At JNB

Premier Lounge Is a decent place. Beverages, some snacks, wifi, and electricity to recharge. Looks like R248 pp/pd though I think there may be a time limit. But I can not imagine how they would enforce it!
