Pa.Frankpower adapter / step down transformer RSA
I'm going in April and will need it to recharge my phone and cameras without frying them.
Anyone have any recommendations on power adapters and 220/110 step down transformers for use in South Africa?

Check your chargers, as practically all modern ones work just fine from 110-220 volts without any adaptors.

jdollartrue but you will need a plug adapter to fit the local recepticals- which can vary from one part of RSA to another.

Saeed and Jdollar and Larry are all correct regarding the ability of most modern chargers to work with all power sources form 110-250v.
As far as the plug adapters, the local Shoprite will have whatever you need for about $2.00 USD.

SaeedMy suggestion is to buy a travel adaptor - I always carry one in my carry on bag.
It comes in handy if you wish to use anything in the plane, as well as having adaptors for practically any country.

pagosawingnutAlso, most of the concessions I have been at have a converter for your cameras and sat phones. I never count on it and take a converter with me but have not had to use it yet. Might be one of the questions for the outfitter you are hunting with.

StonecreekDon't forget that most small electronics will charge with a common 12VDC cigar lighter plug. That is always available in hunting and transport vehicles and may be your handiest source of recharge, especially in the field hunting or in a camp without electricity. If your electronic device doesn't come with such a plug and only uses "house" current, then you can take along one of the little plug-in inverters that produces plenty of 120VAC to run your regular charger.

JCS271I just took a small power inverter that goes into the vehicles power port/cig lighter. It has a standard 110 plug and a usb port. I could charge my cameras, phone, laptop etc. Cost is only about $15 and I actually keep it in my truck here at home so I can charge on the go. When I left Zim I gave it to the PH who was very impressed with how small it was and how well it worked. It is now bouncing around Chirisa in a cruiser waiting for the next hunter to arrive.

Use Enough GunI bought a power converter in South Africa a few years ago and I don't go back without it. I think it was $9 USD. I also use my car chargers on my stuff as well when driving around.

FjoldDon't leave your electronics plugged in at camp with the generator going. I had my phone plugged in to a universal voltage converter and into the outlet in my room. The generator tripped and it sucked all the charge out of my phone battery and fried the universal convertor. I wound up with no way to recharge my phone.
