I am not an expert in this area. But from my experience in Europe ALL ammuntion has to be carried in a seperate locked box and not just in a locked box in your general luggage. Depending on who you get at the airline counter they allow or dont allow you to put your ammo into your bags with your clothing. So better to be prepared and take a smaller suitcase/box for your ammo and a few other items. Having a flimsy small locked box travelling by itself is asking for problems!

What kind of lock box do you guys take with you for your ammo? Last time I went I used a $15 metal cash lock box and put 3 or 4 boxes of ammo in it. This was just for a plainsgame hunt so I didn't have larger ammo but this next year I am going to have some larger 375 rounds and need a little more room. I didn't see much on the cabelas site and wanted to know how you guys take your ammo?

I use a cheap plastic box I got at cabelas it will hold 5 boxs of ammo. USA regulation say it must be in your checked baggage. but that varies in africa in Uganda they demanded the ammo was check separate

You are right, you never know how an airline rep is going to interpet the regs.

Best bet is to be prepard for your ammo to be shipped on its own. For this reason, I use a Pelican 1200 case. It perfectly holds 5 boxes of .375 H&H sized ammo which weigh slightly less than than the 5kg weight limit for ammo.

I have one in bright yellow which stands out on the luggage carousels or carts. Just buy the ones that don't have foam inserts.

I then attach a couple of TSA locks and am good to go if I need to ship it on its own.

Not sure who sells them in Canada, but do a search. I bought mine from Midwestern Case in Ohio. Good service and prices.

Some folks have used surplus ammo boxes and have attached a hasp for a lock.

One time in '96 I was asked to declare and ship my ammo seperately from Kariba to Harare. I just use a small Pelican case with locks as suggested. Personally I've never been asked to ship my ammo seperately other than that one weird instance. I always transit Europe on the way to Africa and have had zero problems directly related to UK or Euro rules.

The issue seems to be a EUROPEAN one. If you transit your luggage gets checked straight through so not an issue. When you collect your lugagge like I did in germany and then went to check it on to the next flight, thats when they finger you! The problem with a $14 cash box is one its not that secure and two its pretty small and easily misplaced. All the european hunters on our trip had bigger boxes to ship ammo + binocs, knives and such in. My little cash box made it but looked pretty lonely on the belt.......!!!

Easy boss! I said I had had no problems. My point was that I use the Pelican case just in case I need it. I've only "Entered" France and England with guns. In either country I had no issue with having my ammo in my regular luggage.

As I said this was from my own experience. Next time I will take a pelican case like you , in case a difficult airline person forces my ammo to fly by itself!

I like the idea of the pelican case guys and will check into them. Probably a little more expensive than a $15 box but I think I will be getting lots of use out of it in the next 20 years. At least I plan on getting a lot of use out of it. lol

It isn't really a European issue...... International LAW says it should be in a separate box but different airlines and some national laws decree otherwise.

I'd suggest you pack it so it can go into either a separate container OR into the rifle case OR into your ordinary baggage and then simply ask the check in agent how they want it packed and then comply with that.

The one thing I'd suggest you avoid like the plague is putting it into a cash box because a cash box looks like what it is and is an open invitation to dumbass thieves who might assume a cash box might contain cash......

When I fly from RSA to another African country, they will often remove the ammunition box from my duffel. They put it in a small white bag and it travels as a separate piece. Other times, it's fine as is in my luggage. Go figure.

My recent trip with British Air required that ammo be in a seperate locked case and not in your checked baggage. I put my small Pelican case in a small carry on piece of luggage and checked it. Be aware that BA will charge you a handling fee for both your guns and your ammo. Gets expensive with fees both ways to and from.

I always use the smallest Storm Case. I carry it in my luggage but are prepared to take it out and check in separately if demanded. Why should I spoil my expensive hunt when it is so easy to be prepared for everything?

In US to SA in luggage in a seperate box.
In Namibia from Windjoek to Katima ammo had to be in with the rifle.
I use one of my springfield pistol boxes has a place for a lock.
Also not sure why the airlines still ask if the luggage or any locks are TSA locks. Read the TSA site they do not have to be a TSA locks. They can even be a combination lock.In africa they have no master TSA key they use bolt cutters on evry thing.

Americase makes a really nice small ammo box for right around $100. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Americase products are very well made.

When I traveled through London, I was stopped from boarding and escorted to my luggage. There, they made me remove the ammo from my rifle case and place it in my checked in luggage. I had not ever traveled through Heathrow before and they don't allow ammo and firearms in the same case. That was 4 years ago so I don't know if anything has changed.

What do you guys do for reloaded ammo? I've ready various places that the ammo should be in the "factory box", so what box would you put handloads in? Dukxdog is using some slip-top boxes, and I assume he's had no trouble with them. Having never flown with a firearm before, I just want to be certain beforehand!

I have used the 20 round slip cover boxes and the 50 round flip top boxes from Midway for my last 3 trips with no questions or issues.

I put a reloading label on the box then seal with clear packing tape.

Some guys have reported making labels on their computer that look like factory wording, ie., "MEC1 Ammunition Corporation".

I don't feel this is necessary but to each his own. Just make sure your cartridge headstamps match your rifle caliber. In other words, don't use reformed .30-06 brass for a 35 Whelen or 9.3x62 or .338-06. I have had them inspected on both sides of the ocean.
