Locks On Gun Case

Just checked in my gun for a United flight.

The lady at the counter said I had to have a lock on every one of the 4 lock points on the gun case (Pelican).

I had only locked the two outside lock points that are reinforced.

That was a new one on me. Fortunately I had two TSA locks that would fit.

United seems to have a bunch of anti hunters working for them. I once had a United lady require me to sign an "unloaded firearm" form and place it in the case with my compound bow!

I just bought a set of eight, keyed-alike locks so that I can put four on the pelican case and four inside, just in case some over zealous idiot cuts them off.

I had one lock cut off. I had spares in the Gun case with instructions to use a spare lock inside and the Lock was NOT Replaced!!!

Use Enough Gun

Slider: Why was just one lock cut off? Did you only have one lock on the case? If so, they apparently allowed a gun case to fly with no protection at all as to the firearm or firearms being stolen or damaged. That alone would be a violation of federal law.

The final insult was when I picked up my rifle at Denver International last night, the two TSA locks were missing!

I don't know why only one Lock was cut off. It had two. One on each end. It arrived in New York on Virgin Atlantic that way. You could pry the case open on that end.

What probably happened is that a sub-intellect TSA agent cut the lock thinking that he wanted to open the case and another TSA agent told him to stop because it was a gun case.

I always carry the rules and regs when I fly..Its come in handy more than a few times..They do invent the rules, but will back down pronto when you ask them why they don't even know the rules for the outfit they work for and slap the rule down on'em...

No TSA locks on my gun cases. I use TSA locks on my ammo case.

Technically you're not supposed to put TSA locks on a gun case. You should be the only one who can open and shut your case; however, as mentioned above most airline personnel and TSA staff are clueless...

And I agree on United. They are the worse I have dealt with. And that's saying alot!

"Can be used" is correct, doesn't say "must be used or required" in that case, correct?

Im a bit out of date these days,as Im simi retired except for some old curmudgeons that don't allow me the honor!! I never locked a gun case, but I insured my guns each trip with my home insurance..If you locked them the cut them off..Then came the combo locks that the airlines could open, don't know where its gone since..African can and will change their laws on a whelm, without reason..I recall my flight was ready and it was only sprinkling rain, and a general closed the airport, I knew him fairly well and walked over and asked him why. His reply, "Good to see you Mr. Atkinson, hope all has been well with you! I closed the airport because I can!" I replied to him with, Well, I can't imagine a better reason" and excused myself..

Ya gotta love Africa!!
