Russ GouldBEST FARE TO JNB mid SEPT 2016
SAA is offering around $1400-1500. Anyone know of a better fare? (not virgin thru london ... traveling with rifles)?

Russ GouldI normally book my own flights but this time I asked Kathi to quote. That was 3 days ago and no response. Is she still in the travel biz?

muttleysgoneJust for kicks I checked Expedia.com for flights from Dulles to J-burg. They now range upward from just over $800 for coach.
I checked south African airways site, and they seem to have some new class of booking; extreme economy. Anyone know anything about this? They call it "Saver". Price was $497
Most of my money I spent on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted

I think that is the equivalent of the old "steerage" class where you have to help row (or in this case flap).

I was looking at round trip prices. I assume that is what this price covered. If you wish you can look for yourself at the South African Airways website.

doubleboymuttleysgone,
I looked, upper $400s, one way JFK-J'Berg, additional upper $400s back.
Can't imagine Dulles is half vs. JFK ?
Either way, lot cheaper than Russ's quote.

Russ GouldI believe that is one way but still a heck of a deal. I am flying out of DFW so my round trip via IAD going "PLUS" coming back "SAVER" is around $1325. The SAVER is a lot lower coming back than going over, so I sprung the extra $100 or so for PLUS going over. In other words I could have done it for around $1200. I also checked LAX origin/destination and it's the same money.

Rphguycrazy. if you look at the Washington to JNB flight, it goes thru ATlanta for $800 on Delta (although the return flight is on Air France).
But if you buy a ticket from Atlanta to JNB, the price is $1300. (all on Delta).
nevermind. just checked Delta's website instead. It was less than $800 on many flight options.
But the cheapest Atl/JNB flight is over $1300 even though the Washington flight goes thru Atlanta.

Russ GouldFor the record we ended up booking on SAA through "Cape to Cairo", an outfit I have used in the past. It was $1300 round trip from DFW and about $1200 from LAX economy.
Kathi never responded to either of my emails. Not sure what her problem is.

BuffHunter63I just booked through Delta. About $1500.00 round trip from Den with one stop in ATL. There were cheaper flights, but I wanted to stay away from Newark/JFK and didn't want to screw with any other foreign countries. My connection gives about an hour for my checked baggage to get loaded on the outbound flight and about 3 hours to clear customs on my inbound flight.
Connection times are very important IMO when traveling through customs.
I booked my JNB to BUQ (Bulawayo) flights separately. I gave myself two days in Jo-burg before heading to BUQ and one night in Jo-burg for my homeward bound flight.
I still need to set up my hotel rooms in Jo-burg, but I am leaning towards the Afton House, because it is cheap and close.
