longfeather1transfer through JFK with guns
Hello All,
For my upcoming flight to Africa I am transisting through JFK airport in New York. Is there anything special I need to be aware of regarding transfer of guns between airlines. My travel agent isn't aware of any special regulations.
Thanks & Regards,
Longfeather

shotgun46I guess the question is are your blags checked through or do you have to claim them and then recheck them. If they are checked through do not worry about it. In bound from SA is no problem TSA clears your firearms and they are rechecked by TSA before you leave the international terminal.
If you have to claim your bags and recheck them it should be no problem. I have claimed and rechecked several times at JFK with no issues. IT may be an issue checking through firearms from one airline to another. check with your travel agent on this. If you do have to claim and recheck make sure you have plenty of time 2 hrs is not to much time.

longfeather1By transiting I mean transfering from my originating flight on United to South African Airways. I will be through checking my guns (hopefully) all the way to Vic Falls.

Bob BixbyI will be flying delta into LGA at around 10:00am and departing from JFK on Air France at around 7:00pm.
Has anyone ever transferred from LGA to JFK with guns?
Are there issues with this flight plan?
Are you even able to take guns on the shuttle from LGA/JFK?
Thanks in advance!!!

LabmanBob Bixby - Better check with the NY transit police on the transfer from LGA to JFK. NY has some crazy gun laws and you should make sure everything is OK before you make the trip. The transit police are the ones that handle gun issues/transfers at JFK.
Is that a ground transit from LGA to JFK?? I've often wondered about that since I live outside of Philadelphia and all the flights to NY go to LGA.

LionHunterI did it once because of a late arrival. Had to switch airports. Took a limo off the books as he dropped a fare. I do not think I was in compliance with NYPD firearms laws as well as their taxi regs. Be careful.

GeorgeSAs long as your bags are checked through, you'll have no issues.
PAPD and NYPD won't even know about your guns.

bhtkevinBixby,
Me and my buddy transferred from LGA to JFK in October and didnt have a problem. It took forever to get the guns checked at JFK but you should have plenty of time. We just took a cab.

George you can't check bags through if you land at LGA and take off from JFK. Ramp rats don't take bags between airports...hard enough to get them to take them to the correct gates at one airport let alone two!

lavacaHeard something a couple of years back about a guy whose arriving flight was late and he was forced to overnight in NY. He picked up his rifles and went to a hotel overnight. He was prosecuted by the NY authorities for having illegal firearms in his possession. I would never go through NY, NJ, DC or Heathrow with firearms. Just my personal opinion, no basis in personal experience, nor will there ever be any basis in personal experience from my standpoint

bronxfatsIn October arrived JFK from Montana on Delta, picked up rifles and carried them to check-in at Turkish airlines. Port Authority Police checked rifles on the floor right in front of airline counter. Fast, polite, helpful.no problem. 4 weeks later arrived JFK from Bishkek-Istanbul picked up rifles grabbed a town car, checked in to an airport hotel with rifles, checked in with Delta next morning.Very pleasant Port Authority Policewoman checked rifles on airport floor and escorted us through security to appropriate X-ray and checkin .......no problem.NY allows travelers a reasonable period to possess rifles between flights, I'm originally from NYC........these cops were great and interested in the rifles and the hunt. Have fun. Jim

ZephyrDitto above
Flew to JFK the night before stayed in a hotel than checked guns in the nest day no problem. I am under the impression as long as you do not go into the city you are all set.
Also, verify two weeks before departure that your rifle AND AMMO approvals are visible to the check-in staff at Air France.
