Outjo Backerie Closed
I just found out the Outjo Namibia Backerie (Bakery) has closed and the building torn down to make way for a new supermarket. It was a great place to pick up authentic German pastries and had the most delicious apple strudel I've ever tasted. I would always stop here going to or from Etosha NP or to or from Kamanjab. Bummer.

Bud: Maybe that was why John didn't stop there while we were with him on safari last month. That's a shame! thumbdown

That is a bummer. We ate there a couple times a year.

I have been through Outjo many times .. a couple of times as recently as July .. I would have stopped for apple strudel, for sure if I had realized it was there .. Frowner

The Farmhouse is still there, but sad news about the Backerei.

Next time you are in Namibia I highly reccomend the bakery at Solitaire. They also have some great German favorites. Well worth the stop

Eeker Sometimes I wish that I hadn't been kicked in the head by a pigeon all those years ago ... After talking to my lady, she reminded me that, in point of fact, we had stopped there in July .. Nice place .. narrow area to buy the goodies .. and I did have the apple strudel ,,, And it was the best apple strudel that I have ever had ! No wonder my lady cries late at night .. Frowner

I've been through Outjo a couple of times, too, and had no idea about the strudel. Dang.

Outjo is great. Bummer to hear it is gone.

The solitaire backerie is not what it used to be on the personality side. The big guy (Moose I believe) died a couple years back. Apple crumble is still good but not the same flare when served.

You are right, the strudel was not what we were expecting having heard the stories. I now suggest going for some of the others options.

Good news on the bakery. It is returning when the new shopping mall is complete.

You definitely wouldn't stop for the decor but the strudel is the best!

I remember ordering some of the best freshly made individual meat pies in the entire world from a little hole-in-the wall shop located in Gwanda, Zimbabwe, that had absolutely no ambience, but "to die for" pies (chicken, beef, pork). tu2 It was run by an older white couple and we stopped by there every time we went through Gwanda for years. It's been gone now for quite some time. The individual meat pies were very inexpensive and generously sized! We'd pick up two each for our lunch when either going North or South between Beitbridge and Bulawayo. Big Grin

I doubt if I have had a dozen meat pies in my life ... I do remember, however, going back overland from the Chete .. we started with four landrovers and three of them broke down on that hellishly long drive ... the third one breaking down at Gokwe if I remember from 26 years ago correctly .. Dave Masson walked over to a rough looking restaurant and brought back a bag of meat pies ..

I was not at all impressed .. until I ate more than my share !!! Fabulous !!!!
