USA to Italy with Firearms
Anybody ever do this?

I am being told by an Italian outfitter that it’s complicated to the point of being impossible, and that I shouldn’t even think about it.

Looks like we’re going to have to hire rifles and guns and I hate doing that.

.

Obviously being European it is easy with a an EFP.

Hunted roe deer with friends from TX in Italy some years back.

As a non European attending a recognised sporting event (inc hunting) you may bring and use a firearm in Italy. Big hunting culture and widespread firearm ownership (mostly shotguns). Handguns a different issue with a lot of regs.

Fair bit of paperwork and some costs on the Italian side but easily doable!

Suggest you tell your guy to pull his finger out as you plan to bring your own!

Sounds like your outfitter wants to make some $$ by renting you firearms. A few years ago, a guy from my gun club took a handgun to Italy for an international pistol match. He said it required paperwork but was doable. He told me he didn't have any problems when he arrived in Italy since he had all the necessary paperwork.

I think international competitions the license would have been easier because of the shooting organization there.

Hunting might be different.

I know this is the case in many countries.

The Italian authorities are a fraction short of being paranoid when it comes to movement of and possession of firearms.

The licensing process just to owning a firearm is in itself an obstacle course filled with bureaucracy and expenses.

Importing smooth bore and rifled guns on a temporary basis for competitions is far less complicated because of the involvement of the organizers but for hunting rifles and hunting permits would likely be an adventure not to be repeated in a hurry.

I recommend calling and paying Travel with Guns if wanting to take your own weapon.
