Recharging digital camera batteries in RSA
Headed to RSA in 10 days for my first African hunt and the missus just gave me a new digital camera (Canon SX500 IS) for Fathers' Day (thanks kids) with a rechargeable battery as well as a spare. Will I be able to plug in the charger over there using an adaptor or will a transformer be necessary?

Thanks.

Just need a adapter. Check with outfitter, he might have one you can borrrow.

Thanks Chris.

I did something crazy and actually fished out the CD-ROM instructions (it'll never happen again) and you are quite correct. Fortunately, I had a set of adaptors in my kit bag.

For a number of years now, charger manufacturers have had enough sense to have their chargers suitable for work with all AC voltage in the world.

As mentioned above by Chris, all you need is an adaptor.

I actually carry a travel adaptor in my carry on bag.

Sometimes I use it in the plane too.

+1 you can confirm this by looking on your charge cable, their should be a black plastic square on it. under neath it will tell you in put: 110~240V then its good.
most outfitters should have an adapter in the room as a matter of course.
Enjoy your hunt Wink

Mat,
one word of caution SA adapters have round prongs.
make sure you don't accidentally get square pronged adapter. (east african adaptor) OR easier yet get a cigarette lighter adapter for the bakki Big Grin

Another thing you might consider is a small surge protector. I used one that had 5 American style plugs and then plugged it into one adapter.

This way I could do all my charging, camera, camcorder and run my laptop etc from one location,

Check the back of whatever it is you are wanting to plug in and verify it is OK for up to 240 volts. There will be something on the back that will say something similar to
OK for use at 100v-240V

This is especially good advice, particularly if you are somewhere that isn't equipped with regular current. Autos built within the last forty years or so are almost universally 12 VDC negative ground and all use the same cigar lighter socket.

If anyone needs to buy one of the adaptors you can pick them up in the Joberg airport at the electronics store near the Out of Africa store. Cost about $10.00. I tried to buy one at home before heading over without any success. I was really disappointed when I stoped at a AAA travel store and they tried to sell me the wrong adaptor claiming it worked in "Africa."

I take a 12V to 110 V auto cigarette lighter charger for my cameras and cell phone. And then plug the camera charger into that unit.
Auto parts stores sell them $25-30.
You can plug in while riding in the land cruiser.
