traveling thru Newark to Joburg

Did Newark twice last summer. No worries and all went smooth. Only thing is this: it takes time to go through custom with your 4457 and then TSA. If you have to make a connecting flight allow four hours. And your flight may be 1/2 hour late, too. My first trip I missed my connection to Alaska as I only had two hours to make the connection.

I flew out of Newark with a rifle (not to Joburg and no suppressor) and it went fine. On the way back my rifle was lost which was not necessarily Newark's fault at all. I did have to drive back to Newark to pick it up at a later date as they refused to ship it, which was annoying.

Forgive my ignorance…can one even “export” a suppressor?

what I think is since I am Starting in Sioux Fall, Sd to Denver then onto Newark then Joburg that the only time TSA will only check my gun case is in Sioux Falls as the flight is United all the way so I should not have to go through customs leaving or any other TSA checks since the airline will have custody of my gun case and I should not have to touch it I hope I am right.I read if you get checked and have a suppressor in Newark you will be arrested. I have a call in to customs to see if I clear customs when I get back to my home airport in Sioux Falls, Sd. maybe I am thinking to much on this its my first trip to Africa

You can take a legally owned suppressor out of the country. I know South Africa allows them, not sure about other African destinations. They are quite popular in Europe and typically an over the counter purchase, not the hassle we have to deal with in the U.S. I always found that quite odd. In Europe firearms regulations are much more strict than here, but when it comes to a suppressor, things are quite the opposite.

You must clear customs at the first airport you land at in the US- Not your final destination. That would be Newark. Most US airports don’t even have customs and immigration check points as they don’t receive inbound international flights. Remember, customs is completely separate from TSA.

Thanks, I also saw a note from TSA outlining the process…pretty much like a firearm.
I don’t think I would try to take one if I was transiting a third airport.

Regarding some other countries, in New Zealand silencers were sold at hardware stores, $49.00 for .22 suppressors and $79.00 for .30 cal suppressors. The shop owner told me that quite a few US visitors bought them, not me.

Yes you buy one while there, use it, and then leave it with presumably the outfitter, never try to bring it home. The cost of suppressors in other countries is amazingly low, goes to show you the amount of mark up there is here in the U.S.

You have to clear customs in Newark.. Guns are bad enough there, a suppressor is just asking for a nightmare - and that’s assuming it is even legal to do so in New Jersey..

IMHO there are MUCH better airports to fly thru - Dulles is ALWAYS my go to airport…

Also check with the NJ state police and the Port Authority police if you're going to take the suppressor. It's the Port Authority police you will be dealing with at the Newark airport as well as TSA. My advice is to leave the suppressor at home.

BTW - I used to fly SAA out of the JFK airport in New York. I never had any problem with the port authority police.

Lab, that was a great flight....landing at 8:05 AM in Jo'berg with plenty of time to catch the outbound flights that day. That was when I used SAA all the way thru, so no SAPPS in SA. Sadly that's no longer an option.

I checked with tsa and got a reply from them and they said it was up to customs not tsa. checked with port authority and they said they did not see any problem as I am just passing thru and customs and tsa and the united will be keeping custody of the gun case as I will not be allow to access it

When you land in Newark, on your return, you will find they don't have a clue! Customs will check you, your bags, and your gun case.
