Every year there is some new twist. Last year they would not let me pack clothing inside my tuffpak with my guns. What's the latest on this quagmire?

(I prefer to put my takedown guncase in the bottom compartment of my Boyt bag ... this become illegal some years ago ... has anything changed regarding this requirement?)

Weights ... two bags of 50lb each? What happens when you recheck to Zim on SAA? Are they still weighing carry-on bags?

How in the world can Delta tell you what you can pack in your TuffPak??? I'd want to see it in writing from them - I'm sure it doesn't exist! I've printed their firearms regs and there is nothing like that therein. I'd like to know the details of what exactly happened to you.

I'll be on Delta from SFO in 3 weeks and my TuffPak will be full.

It's not Delta, it's SAP. They don't want to have to deal with clothing and personal effects when they inspect guns. There was a memo out signed by the big wig at SAPS JNB about 18 months ago to this effect.

Furthermore, air botswana won't allow it either, leaving from JNB. They made me put my clothes in a plastic bag.

That sucks.

I have everything inside a Tuff Sack which goes into the TuffPak, so in that scenario I could remove it and send it as another bag. So, did they charge you for your sack of clothing as another piece of luggage? And is anybody else experiencing this problem? Honestly, this is the first I've heard of it. Sounds like I'll be speaking with a SAPS supervisor.

I would encourage you to go to the PHASA website and file a complaint about this with them, even at this late date. They dislike SAPS making problems for hunters.

As I've said before RSA is killing the Golden Goose which is hunters.

When I arrived at JNB in mid June i had TONS or (tonnes for you pommies) of clothign packed in my gun case around my guns. Guy ahead of me had a tuff Pak stuffed with clothing as well. SAPS didn't say a word.

That has not happened to me either when I took my TP to Africa.

I also take a TP to Argentina with clothing stuffed around my shotguns. Not even a hint of a rule such as this.

As long as the guns are easily removed and replaced in the TP, there is no problem with SAPS based on my experiences.

Also, SAA is weighing carry ons as of July 10 when I was last there.

Finally, a word of caution. If you are over nighting in JNB, be sure you bag is checked to JNB and not to HRE. The agents in ATL will see your final destination and tag your bags accordingly. They do not understand that you are spending the night and claiming your bags along the way.

It seems most airlines allow 7 Kgs per carry on bag.

Economy passengers are allowed one, Business and First Class are allowed two.

I have only seen this being enforced on flights within Europe.

On my last two trips through OR Tambo they have checked carry on bags that appeared large or overweight. 7 Kg or 14 lbs is the stated maximum. Also, the carry on is in addition to a personal bag (laptop, briefcase, etc) that must be able to be fitted under the seat. I checked the SAA web site and called the local office to verify that two bags were allowed.

It's always wise to check twice and print the current rules from the airline web site to take with you - just in case.

SAA's website lists carry on weight as 8kg/18lbs. 1 piece allowed for coach, 2 pieces for business/first class.

I do not recall the exact weight, but 8kgs, as mentioned somewhere above, sounds about right.

I was allowed two carry on articles. My backpack was light, allowing me to reallocate some of the load.

Of my two bags and my wife's two bags, the only carry on weighed was my roller bag. I guess it looked heavy. My wife's softsided tote and purse and my backpack didn't cause any concern.
