hughmanCanada to RSA via USA
Hello to my fellow Canadians who may be going to South Africa and considering transiting through the US.
In September, I went Toronto to Washington Dulles to Johannesburg, and returned the same way. I had wondered what sort of problems, paperwork etc. might be required for the rifles I was taking and had had a number of differing opinions, some of which were from people or organizations one would expect to be reliable. I E-Mailed the BATF&E in the US and in reply I got a message that no paper work, forms, etc. are required when just transiting through the US, luggage checked through, no stop-over.
Some of the American security agents are not familiar with this, so I was glad I took a copy of the E-Mail to show them. With only some minor Q&A, the whole thing went very smoothly. The only special paperwork I needed was my Canadian Firearms Licence, Registration cards for the rifles, and the Canadian Export/Import Permit
So, if you are considering transiting through the US with firearms, fear not, it can be done quite painlessly.
Good luck,
Hugh

makiHugh,
Thanks for the update. The change in enforcement standards in the US will give us moer travel options. That can only be a good thing.
