OK, maybe I am a little over the top regarding our recent Emirates experience, that’s precisely why I waited several days before writing this piece. I am old enough to remember when air travel was an event. People dressed well, passengers were treated with respect, and the entire experience was one of smooth operations and expected results.

The current state of all air travel is little better than a bad third world bus terminal. Replete with the usual suspects, few standards, animals of most varieties (think service animals), uncomfortable cramped spaces and questionable hygienic facilities. Occasionally I think a good representation of hell is any long haul carriers restroom at the end of a twelve plus hour flight! I have flown most of the truly long distance international carriers with the exception of Singapore Airlines, Aeroflot (I had to be honest), Italia, Aer Lingus, Eithad, and Qatar Air. Did you travel with firearms! If so can you tell me how it went?

No we did not have guns in tow. However friends have made the trip several times in last 12 months with no problems. Apply for the required permit and give it 45 days, they report no problem. I am told much more of a hassle to transit Joberg. Let me know how you are treated and especially with firearms!

Have traveled Emirates with guns on 4 different occasions to Zimbabwe from SFO no problems . I would take Emirates as my firs choice every time

I was unable to board my Emirates flight to Dubai, with my rifles, on June 3 because a form that Emirates requires was not filed as required at least 3 days prior to boarding. Other than that my flights; Houston to Dubai, Dubai to Joburg snd return flights to Houston were as good as it gets. It wasn't emirates fault that their rule was not followed.

Did you contact Emirates to complete the form prior to your departure or were you not aware of their rule?

I was not aware of the rule. It would not have been problem because the information called for is all on the gun license documents. I just could not get it done in the time allowed.

I hired an expediter who thought my travel agent was doing it and my travel agent thought the expediter was doing it.
Can’t really fault either of them.

Do they still have a Ban on the Transport of Big Game Hunting Trophies?

I flew with Emirates from DFW to Dubai and on to Harare, through Lusaka, earlier this month, with firearms, for a hunting safari in Zim and had no problems with any aspect of the trip (except for two less than competent individuals at US Customs at DFW on the return.) Emirates was excellent in all respects, but I had all of the paperwork completed weeks before departure. I was the only one on this flight with a firearm. This was my second such round trip through Dubai on Emirates and I am a huge fan after having used many different airlines in the past for safaris to East and Southern Africa.
