This is my third stock project made from a semi-inlet of Western black walnut. I did the final shaping including re-shaping of the shaowline a bit and contouring & finishing. Tim Smith-Lyon did the 22 LPI checkering. Bottom metal came from Duane Weibe, reproduction cocking piece was knurled, rust blued and timed by Craig Libhart. Tru-Oil, satin Pro Custom Oil and pumice and rottenstone.

Good work! I like the Harvey Rodgers cheekpiece and especially the Dale Goens 'vee-intrusion' into the checkering pattern. I use this touch often on my own builds, Dale was a real artist.

Thanks Joe. The semi-inlet was a hybrid made from my pattern and another pattern the inletter (Randy Murray of Nyssa, OR) had that had a cheekpiece that was close to what I wanted. I did trim the lower rear portion of shadowline back a bit. It was a bit too wide for my taste. So that V is a Dale Goens design. Cool.

Very handsome rifle. I have a 7x57 on a 36 Mexican. A very nice rifle but yours is better. The gunsmith turned the flange off the cocking piece though and I've been looking for a another ever since. The '36 Mexican, just like the '03 Springfield just doesn't look right without it.

I really wonder about the practicality of those cocking piece knobs......but damn...I like 'em!

Remember the old 22's had a cocking konb? Well...I read a story in American Rifleman many years ago...seems our hero used the cocking piece knob on his 1903 much the same way he used it on his old 22...

Until one day he pulled it out of his truck by the barrel end...BAM! went thru his chest..

That knob was useful in the days of semi-reliable primers...yank back the firing pin and give it another whack. M-98's have a notch on the cocking piece to use a cartridge rim to "give it another whack"

Don't know what brought that to mind...Maybe a subliminal warning???

I hate those cocking knobs, the couple custom mex 36's I've done I swapped out the cocking piece. My thought, if it didnt go off the first time, do I really want to yank on that and see if it works on try number two?

Put your old cocking pieces in "classified"...they'll be gone in a heart beat

If you have one with a cocking knob I want it! I know they are useless with modern ammunition and they add mass to the cocking piece but a Mod 36 just needs a cocking knob.
