New "custom" rifle
I hit a small local gun show last weekend and saw a rifle that really interested me. It was a "custom" job, really a nice clean, probably reblued Mexican Mauser action, with a 7x57 E R Shaw barrel, and a stock to die for. The stock is black walnut, dark chocolate brown with swirling black streaks throughout the butt area and flowing through the wrist into the forearm. It has contrasting forearm and pistol grip caps. Downside was the original military trigger, not bad about 3lbs in each stage for a total of a 6 lb pull and a rail type scope mount that hinders access for loading. I made a deal and traded a post 63 Win 70 featherweight in 30-06 for it and think I am going to like it quite a bit, as it's a lot larger and heavier, and a milder recoiling caliber. Right now it's at the gunsmith. He is going to install a Timney featherweight trigger and change out the bridge rail to some two piece bases so I can use some Warne QD scope rings.

I'll second that emotion. Great caliber, sounds like nice wood.

WADR I think that stock could be improved upon with some judicious removal of wood in certain areas along with some checkering.

I thought about checkering and decided against it, after seeing some pictures of nice rifles without. The grain flows nicely through the pistol grip area as it is supposed to but has enough character that would be muted by checkering. I am not going to remove or rework anything, it's a big stock, it fits me much better than most and just feels good as it is, looks just is not everything.

It's your rifle, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
