404 takedown on FZH action

Duane Wiebe (CG&R)404 takedown on FZH action
This was a bit challenging... When the action was received, it was completely disassembled ..Hmmm...right away, found the bolt was fully .010 oversized and while presented as 404 action, it was a standard action with a long magazine (suitable for a 505 Gibbs!)
The bolt stop would not even fit into the action, the bridge dovetails were WAY oversized...in short, not a darn part was compatible with any other part.
FZH is not heat treated,, meant to be finished up by the gunsmith...but this was a "second owner" action,,,got crosswise with his client and I ended up with a problem child apparently assembled from various sources....plenty discontentment prevailed.
The happy ending is that everything is fixed, heat treated, feeds and functions like a DGR must.
Client likes a takedown for the handy travel size and the case doesn't scream "I'M A GUN OWNER AND HUNTER"
Duane, Gustav (Goose) is very happy with his new 404.

customboltMama-mia. So nice. Do you build rifles in your sleep Duane? CB
Life itself is a gift. Live it up if you can.

CougarzVery nice looking rifle.
I admire you going the extra mile for your customer given the circumstances.

Yes..our friend is one hell of a nice guy and he had a couple crappy experiences in the world of custom rifles.
Kinda makes me go a bit extra to clean up history in a small way
Yes, he's been screwed over a few times, even by some of the big names in the gunsmithing world. It kind of casts a shadow on the trade. It's an unregulated industry...buyer beware.

WEll..We have plenty of regulation by the alphabet boys. It's the ethically challenged part that casts the shadow.

ArnietI can see the Needy Road BATF offices off my back deck. If you want me to flip them off for you, just let me know.

RockdocThat’s lovely Duane.
A lot of work to get a supposedly right action right!

thirdbiteGreat looking, as always. Could you convert a Heym Express to takedown using the factory stock and barrel?
17 June 2023, 20:12
Duane Wiebe (CG&R)Might be able to use the existing barrel, but could not use the stock (wih the way I do things, anyway)
Kind of a moot point since my plate is full up

Well....Iv 'e only had one audit in all the time I've had an FFL. Just double check your bound book, and tell them what they want to hear.
If you don't have a bunch of AR's and combat boots laying around, you should be OK
Flipping them off...? That might be a bad start. HAR!

RR 314Beautiful build! Sounds like you were one of the few who wouldn’t have given up on the action!

Duane Wiebe (CG&R)The story goes...A farmer found his horse had died.....""Never saw him do that before"
Kind of my dilemma with this action.

bwanamrmCool rifle Duane!
On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Duane Wiebe (CG&R)Just a point of information on FZH..I have another here...everything fits! No issues whatsoever.
After a five figure deposit, that 404 action sat around a the shop of "Gunmaker X" for EIGHT years
I'm sure now that the components were swept out of corners just to get it gone.
