Just tried buying one from Wisner, he is out and has not made any for quite a while. Anyone else making them?

It would be fun to see the photos of them anyway.

Dammit. Two days late but not even a dollar short, as per usual.

Timing ain’t everything; it’s the only thing.

Is there some kind of mailing list I could be on if that were possible?

I think quite a few smiths offer these. I personally won't have anymore for sale in the future as I'm working on the last few Model 70's I'll ever use

Stephen Heilmann does a great job on these

"last few Model 70's I'll ever use..." That sounds like an interesting story in itself. All ears if you care to elaborate.

Jeffrey,

Go to D'Arcy's blog and read the 5 entries he made this week.

Wisner's is as good as it gets, but it's not too difficult to welb a blob , shape and checker.

Lately, I have done a few for the post 64..Near as I can tell, no commercial drop in available

Do you use a jig to hold them while checkering to start the lines straight. Wanting to know as I have 2 that I have been toying with but not sure how or where to start.

I don't use a jig, clamp part in a small vise and hold that in the bench vise. Checker diagnally rather than N/S with a 40 line tool. STart at the "top of the globe" and work to either side Once you've done it a couple times, just takes a few minutes

I have done several of them. Weld on glob of meatal with mig welder.Shape it up on a grinder & file. The checkering tool I have is about Three eights of a inch wide. When you start plop it down & start moving it until you get a good grove going. Don't lift it until you do or you will loose your place. it's not too hard but you need a checkering tool. You may use mine Call me 480-661-5426.

I have a new 40 lpi checkering file. My hesitance is screwing one up and then having to weld and start over. Wisners has no more and the future does not look good anytime soon.

You don't have to weld a "glob" on there. Tally makes a nice little oval bolt stop release that you can checker first and then weld it on.

Larry suggests a MIG..I use TIG...Most likely doesn't matter as long as you get a nice blob to shape and checker.

A note: The stop seems to contain lots of carbon, kind of "pulsing" the build up seems to work best for me.

Do you shape and checker the "blob" as welded or do you anneal before those steps?
18 February 2023, 20:40
Duane Wiebe (CG&R)
Just weld it, shape and checker
