ideas for project- fn supreme mauser action
I just acquired an FN barreled action in 458 Win. I haven't yet decided what to do with it, other than put it in a "nice piece of walnut."
I'm not sure how far to take it, as clearly the sky is the limit with a custom rifle build.
I'm just trying to solicit suggestions for what to do with this guy in the vein of getting something nice, but trying to stay cost effective.
So far I've found out that I should have a recoil lug put on it. I don't know what, if any, caliber conversions might be considered in this action. I don't really know what my stocking options are.
It's hard to start a project without deciding what the end point will be. Any thoughts?

To change the look of the action to a more distinctive or custom look, get a McClellan or Talley custom bolt handle. As far as a nice stock, many 'smiths will be $4K and up to fashion a custom stock from a blank, including checkering. If you don't want to put that much into it, there are some nice options from companies that make inletted stocks, like Williams Micro-fit and others.

Concerning a new/custom stock, I would highly recomend Accurate Innovations. Their work and level of finish is superb.

Check out the links in my signature line for more info about Accurate Innovations...

I wish you good fortune with your custom rifle decisions.

Best,
Nemo.

Have considered doing any of the stock work yourself?

Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Jim-
The answers are yes, and yes. I just haven't decided how far to take this project. I'm still at the stage where each answered question provokes three more questions.
By the way, that 375 on your table was superb.

I would do very little. Locate an original factory FN sporter take-off stock and put the two together. Original FN 458 barreled actions are scarce. If you want a different caliber, rebarrel another action.

I would drop it in a Stockys B/C with the bedding block [no recoil lug needed] mount up a 1.5-5 leuplod in a set of Talley QD's and make an Alaskan and Canadian [heavy/dangerous] game, bad weather basher out of it.

Kabluewy, I was referring to stock #2197, the OD green w/ black webbing.

You can go to stockys and use their search box to find this one.

There not pretty stocks, but tougher than a boot heel.

Yes, I see. And good price too. tu2

I'm always looking for good Mauser stock solutions.

Wow, a FN in 458 - drool - drool - that ought to be a fun shooter. What a treat of a rifle.

Yes Sir KB, I love all things FN, and the 458 Winchester Magnum is a down right "CLASSIC"

Thanks for your thoughts. Stocky's is a good resource, thanks! What I have done is bought a blank from Jeffosseo, which I will have carved on a duplicator and try doing the final shaping and inletting myself. It should be a fun project. I'll likely have a recoil lug added to the barrelled action first. The more time I have had to think about it, the less I want to make extensive modifications, but would still like to turn it into something attractive.
