The rifle wears a McGowan barrel contoured to match the Winchester featherweight contour. The stock is a McMillan Hunters EDGE, it has a Williams extractor, and the bottom metal is PT&G aluminum. The mounts are Leupold Super Low DD's and they mate perfectly with the Leupold 6X36 and that stock. I've built four of them in various chambering's and for a general purpose hunting rifle that "blueprint" is for me, so far, impossible to improve upon.

I have a 7x57 but it is on a 1909 action. But my second ever custom ordered rifle is a 257 Roberts (the 7x57 was the first) on a Mdl 70 classic long action.Fits and functions perfectly. As my first ever custom I ordered a 7x57 simply because it would do what I wanted it to do(shoot plains game)and I had never owned a rifle of that caliber. I had it specifically built to shoot 175gr Nosler Partitions and it does that with supreme accuracy for 3 shots (very thin tapered barrel and climbs when it heats up). It acquitted itself quite well on my final safari taking several Kudu at varying ranges over 250yds. I don't believe a 280 would kill them any further or any deader so why have one especially when I desired a 7x57. It's a mild caliber to shoot and definitely has done the job over time so I would say it's well vetted.

My 2 cents worth. 7x57 is a fine old cartridge and own an older Ruger 77 tang safety that I had rebarreled from 270 Win to 7x57. No modifications to reciever/magazine was needed for this cartridge. I do enjoy my range time with this rifle as it is one of my more accurate rifles. Its my rifle I'd use on our 400 or 600 yard range.

Too long for M700 "Too Short Action"(2.8")& anything that is shorter than .375 H&H length is too short for the M700 "Too Long"(3.75") action.

I beleive a M70 "Short Action" can ingest OAL cartridges in the 3.1" range & that is ample for almost any 7X57 bullet combo.

however, a M48 Yugo LR 98 @ 3.225" is the perfect length

My wife used the above rifle to clobber this guy yesterday.

A person can put the 7x57 into any action which is long enough, of course.
The standard 280 throat is too short for most bullets and it is necessary to seat them deep so one can't take advantage of a long magazine anyway. In fact, a 280 I built for myself couldn't even use the pre-64 mag length with most bullets. I found myself wishing I had made a 7x57.
Martin Hagn once told me that when he was starting out, he was told a 7mm cartridge longer than 57 mm wouldn't be as accurate as the 57mm case. Myself, I don't know but it was an interesting bit of arcane belief.
If I was to build myself a bolt action 7x57, my first choice would be a Mauser and my second would be a pre-64 Model 70. I could stretch a short action Model 70 classic enough to handle a 7x57 without much difficulty, I think. In fact, I think it would be easier to get the 7x57 to feed well in a Model 70 SA than to get a 284 to work well in the same action. If I find a cheap 308, I might give it a try. Regards, Bill

My 7x57 is built on a M96 Mauser beautifully done by Jim Wisner. A perfect platform it seems.

I assume you will lengthen the magazine a bit. Do you intend to open it to the rear? That was my first thought although I like the middle screw and would hate to lose it. I suppose one could open a bit at each end.

Looked at a VERY nice 7x64 on a post-war Mauser action (made by an unnamed German smith). Barrel is rough, but everything else is in spectacular condition and has some beautiful wood and an old Hertel scope like new. Have wanted to find a donor for a 7x57 and would appreciate your thoughts.

IMO, a proper 7x57 should be on a G33-40 or Brno Mod. 21 or 22 small ring..

That said, I would just look around for mod. 70 FWT., CFR in 7x57 as they produced that model for quite some time a few years ago.

Other than that why not a good pre 64 action or LR Mauser...

Just my personal approach to the 7x57, lots of other options out there.

A 7x57 with a long 06 length box and a throat that will seat a 175 gr. Hornady or Nosler .284 deep can be loaded with H414 way beyond the 7x57 book specs and in fact on the chronograph it will outdo the factory 7 mag ammo..My pet load is the 160 gr. Nosler at 2960 FPS..that, in effect, betters the 7x57 Ackley Imp a tad and this version of the 7x57 walks off and leaves the .280 in the dust. All of the Brno mod 21s and 22s are so set up and they cook....
