404 Jeffery in progress
Got the first pics of my new Jeffery today. It started out as a Southgate 300 Weatherby.

added a Talley handle and Satterlee safety

Recknagel rear sight

H&H style front sight

L-W Mauser Type A contour barrel and Talley barrel band swivel

It will also feature a Weibe 4MJ magazine & floorplate assemble. Roger Ferrell is doing the metal.

Roger M. Green will be carving the stock.

Looks like a great start with quality components and craftsmen. I would have used a different bolt handle but that's just a matter of preference. I look forward to seeing more.

Also, I've had very good luck with the LW barrel on my 404.

That H&H sight is spot on! I presume it started life as a straight Recknagel and was then judiciously contoured and textured. Excellent!

Yes, it started out as a Recknagel. I can't wait for the finished product. It will have Recknagel quick detach scope mounts with the G8 rear on a square bridge. Roger had a similar setup on display at DSC in January.

mrfudd,

did you order the barrel from Lothar Walther and then send it to Roger Ferrell or did Roger Ferrell order the barrel?

I am planning on ordering the same barrel for a Southgate 300 Weatherby I own and I have some questions.

I ordered the barrel and delivered it to Roger with the other parts.

mrfudd, sorry if I appear dimmer (or dumber) than usual, if that is possible, but I thought a Weatherby action would look like, well... a Weatherby!

What is the difference with a Southgate?

The work to date is lovely. I really like the look of that safety.

Cheers,

Chris

Weatherby originally used Mauser actions for their rifles. They sometimes are referred to as Southgate Weatherby's since that is where the shop was located at the time in Califonia.

When they came out with the really big cartridges, they used a Schultz and Larsen action to start.

Finally, they designed their own, which is what you see today in the Mark 5.

Just a piece of input meant in good faith. That round bead front sight whilst looking good may cause problems.

It will shoot away from any bright sunlight causing the shot to strike high left or high right (according to sun position) of where you intended it to go.

My advice would be to have the "round" of the bead filed flat to give a disc instead of a "ball".

Is this the barrel contour you were referring to?

when ordering the barrel and selecting a chambering (.404RimlesN.E. (10,75x73) chamber), the order form then requests values for "chamber protrusion" and "protrusion tolerance (prior to final headspacing)".

I would like L-W to chamber the barrel but I have no idea what to enter into these fields.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
