I work my but off in the oilfield, so I'm finding it hard to sleep during this extended Christmans vacation. I finally learned to use photo bucket, so like a kid with a new toy, I'm playing around. Here are some pics of some other toys to get your hear pumping:

I got this from an Auction. I've found a few in pawn shops for cheap that I've sold or traded. This one was not cheap! Never had one I wanted to keep. I LIKE this one! What do you think- 257 Roberts? 6.5 Swede? One of Duane's bottom metals wood look gooood on this. BTW, ya'll just let me know when you get tired of me posting my pics!



Bought this from a fellow A.R. member in the classifieds. It's been refinished and is in 7x57. Kinda rare I guess, but since it's been refinished I won't feel guilty using the action for a Type "A" 9.3x62 Oberndorf repro at some point.
I photo-shoped the serial number out, in case you were wondering.

The 33/40 would be nice in a 6.5x57 mauser ....

Whatever you do, please don't drill holes in the front ring of the banner Mauser. If you need scope mounts, get the ones that mount on the barrel in front of the front ring like on this Dorleac rifle.

That's what I'm talkin about. Don't drill the bannner gun, make an open sight express or stalking rifle, or keep it original. Maybe use a Lyman 35.

Roger that on no holes in the banner. Save it for a big bore that has sights on the barrel, no scope. Show off that Mauser banner!!!!

Same for the first one. No holes please. Perfect candidate for the 400 H&H.

Why not the front ring is the best place for them. It is just piece of steel with a stamping on it.

Not like it has any special power

If one makes a custom rifle one should make and do with it as they seem fit

Don't worry, no holes will go in the Banner action. Don't know about the 33/40 though.

Random thoughts...

Will the 7x57 barrel fit on the other action?
If so I cannot think of a better Mauser calibre than a 7x57, vs a 257 or a 6.5...

Then you could get the barrel in 9,3x62 as shown in Sevens thread, with the claw mount out on the barrel, leaving the MAUSER banner intact.

A 7x57, and a 9,3x62 would make a great pair of Mausers, IMHO.

Ray Atkinson has a switch barrel BRNO model 21 with both 9.3x62 and 7x57 barrels. Very Sweet setup. That action is basically a commercial version of the G33/40 without the skeletonizing.

My G33/40 turned into a 30-06 Ackley for my dad that weighs in at 6 pounds even.

To me those are a mountain rifle action, and should be used to make a lightweight sheep rifle. Pitch the bottom metal, and go with a blind magazine in the lightest walnut you can find. Or go fiberglass/kevlar.

Just another opinion.

My two favorite small ring actions are the G33-40 and the BRno mod. 21 and 22..actually both are the same small ring action. I have a Brno mod 21, full custom switch barrel 9.3x62 and 7x57 as stated above and I love it...

The one I am building now is a G33-40, full custom with a 7x57 FWT barrel and all the English bells and whistles...

I also have a 338 Win on a Peruvian 1935 action, and its going to be nice.

What does all this mean, well it means that at some point I'll have to decide which one or two to sell so I can come up with another project to keep me entertained during next years cold Idaho winter.

I plan on bringing a few actions down to DSC; Pre-mod 70, 1909 argies, VZ24, FN Venezuelan, etc if anyone is interested.

I totally understand using a setup like this to avoid drilling into a front ring with a banner or unique military crest, but this particular example looks odd for it's avoidance of what looks like a perfectly suitable mounting surface. Maybe I've been wrong all along, and square bridges are simply cosmetic, but I always thought they were for the purpose of giving one some extra "meat" in order to mill a dovetail, (a la the CZ 550) make into a custom, integrated scope base, or mount for a rear peep sight.

So then, what is the actual function of a square bridge?

I don't find the scope mounting set up on the pictured Dorleac attractive at all. Actually I think it's rather butt ugly.

I think claw mounts have a cool retro look I also like the Jeager side mount or even G&H if you can get a low mount and hi rings.

I like claw mounts too, but I agree with Craigster that the mounting setup pictured above looks like an abomination on an otherwise very nice barrelled action. The solution is worse than the problem in this case; a totally unneccessary functional and aesthetic compromise.

I'm still questioning the actual purpose of square bridges...

May be a dumb question but were any True Mauser actions made for lefty's.
