Just finished this one and thought some would enjoy photos. Other than shortening barrel and moving sight back no metal work. Claro blank was provided by customer.

lindy2I have read in countless other posts that claro walnut is supposedly porous, hard to work with, and doesn't take checkering very well.
Regardless, that piece, and the craftsmanship, both look damn nice! (photography could use a little help though)

customboltVery nice. Your customer has fine taste in walnut. The grain reminds me of a semi-inletted blank I got from Wenig's. I'm curious how much it weighs.

bwanamrmVery nice!
On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

Glen71That's nice! What's the barrel length and chambering?

ClaMarThat's about as nice a piece of Claro as I've seen!
Much of the Claro is porous and has very large growth rings. I've sworn off it for my personal restocking projects. That said, I have a piece I bought from Pachmayr in the mid-1970's that is tight-grained, has smaller pores, and worked nicely. Not quite as fancy as this one, though--it's the kind that make me drool on the keyboard.

srtraxClaro is a little harder to work with...but more times tha not you get more bang (figure) for your buck.
Nice job on the rest of the rifle also, I've always said I would build a licker some day.

AtkinsonMost Claro is California cork wood, but I have seen some awesome Claro. My 6x45 is Claro, very small pores and very few, and its hard as hell and took 26 LPI with no problem..It was hand picked and given to me by the late Tony Barnes of Twin Falls, an outstanding metal and wood smith who made some fantastic muzzle loaders and bolt action Sako and rifles and pistols on Sako actions...He made me a mod 70 3 pos. safety for the Sako L-461 in 6x45 out of a chunk of .30 caliber bull barrel, beautiful work and added greatly to the value of my rifle.
