gasgunnerSpringfield Hornet
This is the rifle who's stock was the topic of a rather extended discussion a few months back. I did finally get it back from the gunsmith with no work done to it so I went ahead and finished shaping, finishing, and checkering it myself. Rifle is a combination of a couple bubba jobs, First was a 1922 that had been converted to Hornet, but was in the original Armory issue style stock. Chambering job was decent enough, and the rifle shot pretty good for a hornet. Second rifle was a bubba'd Rock Island 03. It had been drilled in a hundred places for a scope. The stock had decent inletting, but the outside shaping and checkering was rather poor. I used the 1922 stock to restore another 1922 back to original condition, then took the Hornet barreled action and fit to the 03 stock. A little shaping and sanding and ended up with this. The stock had some light sap wood so needed to be stained.
Feel free to offer any constructive criticism. I do not pretend to be a stockmaker, this is just something I do to help retain my sanity after working on AR-15's all day.

Bill/OregonGG: I think maybe you SHOULD call yourself a stockmaker. That is a lovely package and from what I can tell, the checkering is very nice. Love that scope, too.

BrandoHow hard was doing that work yourself?

gasgunnerThe hard part is finding the time to do it. The work is not hard. Actually, I really enjoy it. Now, if I had to make a living doing it, that would be hard. I have a ton of respect for those that actually feed a family doing stock work. I'd either have to charge way more than it is worth, or work for about $0.50 an hour.

dwheelsI am jealous, sp? of anyone who can say checkering is easy. I am just starting, I hope it gets easier. Your work looks real nice. You should be proud of both stock making and finishing work. DW

Idaho SharpshooterI once had possession of G.A. Woodie's Hornet for two weeks Rock Chuck shooting here in Idaho.
Anybody here know who he was?
