Does anyone know the grain or stitching # of a 49 & 50 Rasp
I am trying to find the grain or stitching # of a #49 & 50 Nicholson cabinet rasp.

I would like to compare a known rasp to French made Liogier rasps.

The last # 49 Nicholson made in Brazil rasp I bought was
worthless in comparison to the one I bought a few
years ago. TIA Kenny

Here is the only equivalent information I have found:

quote:
Many woodworkers ask which Auriou rasps would be replacements for the venerable Nicholson® #49 and #50 pattern makers rasps. While there are no direct replacements for these in the Auriou line, those listed below are the closest matches.

Nicholson® #49 — Auriou 10" Cabinet Rasp 7 grain
Nicholson® #50 — Auriou 10" Cabinet Rasp 9 grain

Not sure what you mean by stitching (I'm guessing I'm learning something new here). I laid a scale on my #49 and counted 15 in an inch. Sound right?

I found a chart on Liogier site that compares
their 8gr to the 49 and their 11 to the # 50.

They are scaled from 1 being large to 15 being small.

I may try a couple Liogier as they are a little cheaper than the Auriou. Not by much. Kenny

Here is another one, Vallorbe, which is machine made but might meet your requirements. I haven't tried one or had one in hand, but Lie Nielsen is an excellent company with top quality stuff.

A good job is sometimes just a series of expertly fixed fark-ups.
Let's see.... is it 20 years experience or is it 1 years experience 20 times?
And I will have you know that I am not an old fart. I am a curmudgeon. A curmudgeon is an old fart with an extensive vocabulary and a really bad attitude.

The BIG difference is that the nicholsons are not hand stiched. That sucks.
