If you are new to custom rifles then I recommend you choose a stockmaker first. Then, with his/her help purchase a blank worth having. There are some wood dealers that are very qualified stockmakers themselves. I would trust their opinion of a blank more than those that just sell wood.

After all, the stockmaker has to stake their reputation on the results of their work. If the stock breaks who are you going to blame?

I agree.I would let the stockmaker or gunbuilder choose some blanks that he thinks are what we are after then show them to me from which I will choose the one we like most.I think the project does not turn out good when the customer alone chooses a prefered blank and insists that it is used.IMO,a custom rifle should be special and not ordinary.Isn't that what a custom rifle is all about?

For many years, until he passed away, I bought sticks from Jack Burres. After he died, I started buying from Cecil Fredi, with the added bonus that on visits to Vegas you could go to his house and look at thousands of blanks until your eyes crossed! I bought a very beautiful blank 6 months or so ago, from Adam @ Luxus. It was worth way more than I paid for it and it will make up into a beautiful stock. Today, I took advantage of the deal Luxus is offering of buying 5 Turkish blanks for $75 ea. Stockmaker Winston Elrod is doing some work for me and I am having them sent to him as partial payment at HIS request. Others have told me that these are exceptional blanks for the money and I have no doubt it is so. For $375 you could buy one lot of 5 and let your stockmaker pick out the best one and sell the rest for a tidy profit, unless you are looking for total exhibition grade. Of course, if you want exhibition Turkish, Luxus can provide that also. Give them all a call, they are all reputable dealers.

The selection that Luxus has is just fantastic. Was up there last weekend and it will make your eyes go bad they have so much outstanding wood.

I purchased two from Roger Vardy in Australia, was very please with both.

I purchased 5 from LUXUS about an hour ago. Picked through one whole pallet; they planed and wet the 10 I was interested in and I then picked five. Certainly not in the same class as their premium walnut, but really nice honest blanks for anything less than a throw down custom. Can't beat the price.

Adam and Clay at Luxus are good folk, I trust them and they have always treated me well. I have bought 7-8 blanks from them in the last 3-4 years.

Two of these blanks were used by Tip Burns to make my 404 Jeffery rifles. They have been great stocks. The stock has held up well these many years!
I still have a blank taking a nap at Tip's place.

Cecil Fredi would be my choice. Cecil has over 35,000 gunstock blanks in inventory. I have 10 custom rifles made from gunstock blanks that I have personally picked out from Cecil's warehouse.
