Custom 243
I was able to get my hands on a Sako L57 action. They only manufactured these from 1957-1959. It will be used to do a custom build for a 243.

Stock is English Walnut with a Shilen barrel. My gunsmith sent me about six pictures of it in progress. See below on what has been done thus far.

What's not to love about the beginning of that sweet process?

Looks like it's going to be a great little rifle.
I love the action!

Looks like a great project. I am amazed at how guys can take a chunk of wood and carve it into a work of art (gunstock).

I love the look of the dropbox, English style stock on your .243.

That is a nice touch one seldom sees on a small bore rifle.

It's not a drop box. The Sako L57 has a slight bend in the bottom metal, and the stock is just following the contour of the bend. Look at the action pic in the first post.

But it looks like a dropbox! Great looking stock.

Well she is finally finished. She made it to the house on Sunday afternoon. It still amazes me how people can take a solid piece of wood and turn it into a three dimensional rifle stock.

Thanks to Thirdbite (an AR member) who sold me the Sako L57 receiver. These were only manufactured from 1957-1959 so I highly doubt I will see one again in the near future. My gunsmith said he had to work on the safety and needed to reset the depth of the firing pin by about 0.020" because it had "too much engagement". (Not sure what the means but oh well)

The stock is English Walnut, Shilen barrel, with ebony used and the grip cap and a fore end tip. ONly thing is that it's a shame the caliber is not on this receiver. My connection to a master engraver is no more and lead time is close to three years on anything from what I have been told.

Thank you, gentlemen. It may be overkill for a 243 Winchester, but it is one that will hopefully be cherished by my little girl for a long time.

No overkill there. I would never pass on a nice custom rifle I like chambered in .243W. Sending a 100 grainer at 3,000 feet per second ain't no slouch.
Thank you for posting. CB
