montea6bLatest project
The photos aren't the best, but I wanted to post the latest shots of "phase 2" of my rifle project.
First, phase 1... I bought a $70 VZ-24 out of a 55 gallon barrel about 12 years ago. (wish I would have bought the whole drum full now!) Bought a forged bolt from ebay, short chambered barrel, (.30-06) Daiton Traister safety, cherry stock, Oxpho-blued the metal, put everything together, checkered the stock, worked very slowly and finished up about 10 years ago.
Here's a shot of phase 1 before checkering:
I never really warmed up to the cherry stock, didn't like the forged handle or cold blue, wanted to have iron sights, and as my tastes changed I decided to hit it again. Found a decent figured walnut monte carlo Fajen stock at a gunshow for a good price that apparently never had an action in it, so I went to work reshaping it to my liking. Bought a side swing safety, slimmed the tang, had Mike McCabe weld a Talley handle for me, reshaped the trigger guard, installed sights, checkered a tab for the bolt release and rust blued everything. Now it just need checkering and sighting in. Plus a scope...
Here's what it looks like now:
