Mr Robinson I am in no way Single Shot practitioner, Truth be told I think I've only ever done 4. Here is the last Hagn I assembled. The stock was designed for scope use only the comb is pretty straight. I didn’t bend any tangs or get out the smoke wrench. I fit the pieces parts and stocked it. Very comfortable to shoot and it’s a 300 H&H, cheek weld is great I’m told by the owner who is left handed. He came to the shop when I was making the pattern for him. Horses for courses I guess, it was the best I could do.

D'Arcy, that is the straightest stocked Hagn I have ever seen and is much to my liking. Great work!

After seeing your rifle, I looked on the internet and have found images of Hagn actions with differently shaped tangs.

This one is what I have seen before and has tangs that drop more than yours.



This one has flatter tangs and a straighter socket for the stock through-bolt and looks like what you must have built your rifle with.



Not sure which is the later model, but I do like the bottom one with the flatter tangs and straighter through-bolt socket much better.

Neither of those will give you any problems in the recoil department.

Matt, if you're thinking 9.3X74R, you may be able to find a 400-360 instead.
They occasionally pop up - Farquharsons, Frasers, and Westley '97s.
The 360 is about ideal on a regular Farquharson action.

Here is one of mine - a Manton 400-360
Steve had it listed for me for a while but I decided to keep it in the end. It could do with a restock so that likely kept buyers at bay.
Anyway, it shoots great so I'll be keeping it for the time being.

Mark Mitchell is indeed the only one master who can crafts the original Farqharson action or a rifle based upon. I think he builds guns for his small customer base and Rigby makes him busy too https://www.johnrigbyandco.com...falling-block-rifle/ He would be my first choice for Farq. But there are still others like Thomas Heuberg, who makes his own sidelever falling block actions which I find tasteful too, just check it here https://thomas-heuberg.de/en/blockbuechsen

I imagine there is little demand for the large actions, as they are intended for really big rounds. I am personally only interested in the small action intended for 308 based rounds (I would like a 257 Roberts), and Ralph has built 300 H&H on it. The mini-max also interests me, and I would want a 222 on that one.

On a side note, I hear the Canadian government has banned the Ruger No.1 due to the fact it can be chambered for rounds useful for taking out vehicles. I wonder if the same applies to the big Hagn action, and if European countries are taking the same stance?

All of the Farkies, including modern remakes, excepting only Glenn Soroka's rendition, have dry-firing limitations and trigger overtravel and misfire and firing pin failure problems.

The Hagn solves those problems, but IMHO is just not as amazingly beautiful as a Gibbs Farquharson. Not even close.

Of course I would be happy and proud to own a Hagn. Just not my first choice.

Soroka is my first choice.

Soroka solved the original Farkie problems and preserved its incomparably beautiful lines.

Sorokas are hard to come by and dearer than your sweetest memory, but they are simply the best out there.

"Better" is subjective. Aesthetical opinions aside, the Hagn is just a simply brilliant design. Aesthetics can be altered by those creative enough. Damien Connelly comes to mind...

I have owned one Farquharson. It was a large action in 450-400 3". That thing was Huge! I now have a HAGN medium action in 30/06. It weighs 7 lb without a scope. A near perfect hunting rifle.

One thing about Farquharsons, they are not all the same. A Gibbs sporter and a large frame PD have very little in common when it comes to handling.

The Hagn actions are indeed wonderfully designed, esthetically they do not match a Gibbs or a Holland/Woodward in my opinion.

I would try to wear out that barrel on some of my prairie dog towns before I used that action! It looks like a larger action than I’m interested in.
