Don't get a 360 degree ported brake. Not as effective and sprays dust. I use the SSG brake and it makes my 338 Lapua Improved easy to shoot. The APS is supposed to be very good as well.

I would use a lead sled, and leave the barrel alone. Muzzle brakes are incredibly loud, and I know of no one that uses ear protection when hunting.

It is also my firm opinion that one doesn't feel the recoil from a rifle during the hunt if he/she is concentrating on the target.

But I am often "an oddball" in these types of discussions... my opinions don't match those of others.

Doubless is 100% correct. I personally lost permanent hearing from shooting with one. I personally have only one rifle with a brake and it is a B.P. muzzle brake. They sell them at Brownells or you can send the rifle with a few rounds to B.P. direct and they will time your gun and custom fit their brake. They have no porting on the bottom and are effective.

Agreed,but this is not really a hunting rifle. I shoot it LR now (1073yds)at my grandfathers farm.

I'm no big fan of brakes at any calibre, but surely not a .338. This has to be the worst invention in firearms history. Don't put one on an otherwise good rifle. MPO.

I had Hill Country Rifle install a Vais brake on my 338 RUM. I've no complaints. It definitely reduces the recoil. One can always use ear plugs for the noise/shock wave.

I also use a lead sled with 2 twenty lb. bags of shot when load testing. Works great when your spending 4 to 5 hours, working with 5 or 6 rifles. Sure does save the shoulder.

Get a good recoil reducing suppressor rated for that cartridge and you solve two problems at once. I bought my first one at age 59 and I'm kicking my butt for waiting so long.

NONE ! Get a good pad and a caliber you can handle. Some guides won't even accept hunters with brakes.

I have a Vais, it's overated, it might reduce recoil about 25%. It on a Greg Tannel custom M700 chambered in 7mm Remington magnum with a 27 inch barrel. However, it's not that much louder then a unbrake rifle. If I were to do it again, I would much rather invest in a sound moderator or silencer, if you do not want to go this route, then I would highly suggest into looking at Darrel Holland quick discharge brake, it turned my brother 300 RUM into a 270 Winchester or maybe a 308 Winchester, I was very impressed.

In another life, I have installed dozens of brakes, many brands, shot them all. Agreed there is SOME reduction in SOME calibers.

I have a Holland QD,and a 3 port muscle. Both work great on a 7mmRemm Mag and a 7mm-375Ruger. It's easy to spot my own hits and I just put ear plus in before I shoot..Always. These are my dedicated "long range" rifles, so I have the time to protect my hearing.
