Mark ClarkI like the Old School look such as Scrollcutter shows.
I come across a lot of custom rifles with no markings that are attributed to a known gunmaker not known for marking.
More info is usually better, if twist, blank manufacturer etc is on the bottom of the barrel someone in the future will be happy.

ScrollcutterHere's one from a while back. Not many ask for the info like Mark, but some do.

srtraxThanks Roger I like that. It just seems to me that scroll work would be easier to engrave than letters and numbers...nice work!
Mark...I always thought that would be a good idea...under the barrel added info.

My camera is trying to take a dump on me...sorry for picture quality.
This is what I have done in the past, at 2.250" it seems a bit long but I like the top to bottom length of each letter. I use to use the stamps...my God that was awful

. Still not sure this is what I'm after?

I like that, exactly what it needs.
The twist and other information is for an owner in the future, or in the case of the blank manufacturers it would be documentation for a sale.

MNRNot as elegant as some others, but here's what I do. I abbreviate more when the bbl shank is shorter.

nyriflemanTC1,
I love that grip cap.
I would think that even on a skeleton grip cap there would be enough room for the makers to have their names engraved.

Ray BCP Donnelly used a machine to engrave his name on barrels. I'm not sure what the proper name of it was but it had plates that were about 4 inches by 16 inches and they had the pattern cut into them, then the pointer on the machine followed the track and cut the name into the barrel, reducing the 16 inches to about 1 1/2".

Believe that's a pantograph. I've seen those used along with acid to deepen the cut. Maybe he'll post a pic...

JmbrownHere's how Hamilton Bowen marks his.
My dad and I had him build a matched pair of Redhawks for us, and had Rob Rowen make the grips.

lindy2for some photos of an engraving machine and the results from it take a look at pages 122 and 123 of Tom Turpin's book entitled Mastery of Wood and Metal. There you can see how the David Miller Company marks their rifles and the machine that they use.

butchlambertJames Anderson has a program on his mill to engrave the things he or his customers prefer.

Ray BTipton Burns, Texas Gunsmith only noted the cartridge on this 404 Jeffery, built on a M70.

Ray Bthis is CP Donnelly's engraving done by the equipment noted in a previous post.
