Black walnut Rem 700 .375 H&H
Really old, really flashy stick of black walnut on a Remington 700 .375 H&H here. Metalwork is a blueprinted receiver, Douglas barrel, Timney trigger, and PTG bottom metal, with a cerakote finish.

Was requested to carve in the finger-groove fore-end shape and cut something other than my usual point pattern checkering, so here's my first fleurs if you can call them that. I hid crossbolts under caps made from the fore-end cutoff. The stock started out as a rough semi-inlet with big gaps and corners knocked off, so there was some fixing to do before all of the fun work could happen.

Looks great! The finger groove forend is unusual but looks nice and I'm sure holds well in the hands. What's the finish on the wood?

Nice work, nice photography. I bet you weren't the one that buggered up that trigger guard screw.

The finger grooves were a special request and I didn't mind doing something a little different. Finish is semi gloss spar urethane, no color added.

Thanks! Wasn't me... gotta love that. Pics were taken outside on a cloudy morning.

Here's some pics from making the stock. First is the stock as I received it.

Epoxying in crossbolt plugs and starting to restructure the corners.

I took 1" off the rear of the cheekpiece and accordingly some off the bottom edge too.

I ended up moving the grip cap about 1/2" up and adjusted the cap and toe line angles. Replaced the cast grip cap with a new Fisher two screw.

Starting on the finger grooves. I cut over 4" off the original stock and fitted up an ebony tip.

Checkering outline and master lines cut in. I used an Ullman Precision Titan to do the bulk of work. Original inletting was sloppy and needed some glass bedding after this.

FWIW, (nada) I really like the "fleurs." I don't care for the traditional take on that, but these are streamlined and very nice.

I love the stock work. You really have talent. Its a shame to put that much work into an action with a stamped sheet metal extractor. I had one that broke an extractor about every year.

Evan, sorry I missed this. A few years ago Evan did a 40X rimfire for me. www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=580905
Hopefully the link works as it is a step by step from the blank. Evan is a very talented young man.

Very nice work and glad to see your pro style of work coming to life. Your progress has been great to watch.

Make sure to mark inside the barrel channel the date and your name so people will have a collectors item in a few more years.

Did you use the finish straight from the can or thin it with something?
