swapping barrels on mausers.
I bought a sporterized k98 at a local gunshow a few months ago in .30-06. It looks like an aftermarket barrel with a banded front sight and adjustable rear peepsight,(redfield?), and it's in a cut down military stock. There are no markings other than .30-06 on the barrel, but it has a very clean bore and very nice blue. I am in the process of building up a 30-06 on an interarms, and the interarms is drilled and tapped on the rear bridge for the same peep sight. I'm thinking about just taking the barrel and peep off of the k98 and putting them on the interarms and going retro.
Will the barrel transfer from the k98 to the interarms? The interarms action is going to get blueprinted (with all the other goodies added), and i'll have the .30-06 barrel recrowned, set back a few threads, and get the chamber recut. The .270 barrel on the interarms will get screwed onto the k98 at at the same time. Thanks (and sorry for rambling Smiler)
If you got all the way through my

Yes you should be able to switch them. The threads on all large ring mausers are the same.

surely the /06 barrel will have to be timed to get that banded front site to work, unless it can be turned independent of the barrel. but not a hard job to some with mechanical sense and a lathe

Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.

I'm just taking a guess, but I bet the front sight band is soldered on. You should be able to heat it up, remove it, then put it back on in the proper location after installing it on the new action.

Yes it can all be done if the K98 Mauser has large ring threads. Two barrel swaps and rechambering to headspace will be a little expensive. If retro look is what you are after, and it was coming out of my check book, I think my money would be better spent on slicking up the K98 action like, maybe new bolt handle, nicer safety, trigger, Ect.. and re stalking it. The Interarms sounds like it's ready to go as is except maybe a rear sight if you don't want to scope it.
