I carried my Davenport 7x57 to south Texas this weekend and took a very nice LaSalle county deer on fellow AR member M16's El Mino Ranch. Thanks for a great time Larry and thanks for a superb rifle Mr. Davenport!

bwanamrmSorry about the rifle details... the rifle was built by Sterling Davenport and is built on an FN Mauser action I bought from Forrest Armstrong. Sterling stocked the rifle in English walnut in American classic style and added a Shilen barrel with NECG Masterpiece island rear sight and an NECG barrel band front sight. I had Sterling leave the original flag safety on the gun just because I really like them. The rifle turned out better than I originally envisioned and has accounted for two nice LaSalle county deer. I love the mild recoil, low report and both old bucks never knew what hit 'em. The 7x57 is a cool, old cartridge with a lot going for it with todays bullets.

fla3006Beautiful buck Russell. This year, we have alot of young bucks with nice horns on our place near Cuero. So far all I have done is watch them.

WoodhitsHere are a few shots, I'll try to dig some field photos as well. In hindsight, there are a couple things that I would do differently on this rifle but it handles, points, and shoots very well.

I agree. That is a really nice looking rifle. One thing though. Although that Len Brownell style bolt handle also looks superb, it also makes your Mauser start to look more and more like a Winchester, especially when you add on the 3 position safety. Looks nice though.

WoodhitsThat is my least favorite part of the rifle, actually the only thing that I would change if I could. At the time I ordered this rifle, I knew very little about what I wanted in a custom Mauser and left the details to the maker. Lesson learned.

A very nice 6.5 year old buck taken on the Encino Ranch on the last day of the world, 12/21/12! Taken with my Anderson/Christman .260 built on a '36 Mex Mauser. For the end of the world as we know it, it was an absolutely gorgeous day. Sunny, 28 degrees, light frost and rutting bucks coming to horns... what a way to go.

505EDDang Russell--you are having a great Whitetail season...the 180 from mine...2 doe and nothing else. Saw a decent buck last weekend, but no shot!

Thanks for the compliment. Despite the pix above it has been a slow season. Warm weather, dry conditions and a decent acorn crop have kept deer movement at a minimum. I actually hunted this ranch 3 times this season trying to get on an older buck but just could not locate one. As far as the the Encino, this is the best deer they have taken so far this season and they usually produce several 150 class deer and a 160 or two. They do a good job of managing the 7000 acre low fence ranch but the usual magic just is not there this year. Several of my hunting buddies are walking away empty-handed.

I would love to see some more pictures of your .260 on the mex action. I have a mex I am planning a 6.5 build on and have not quite decided on caliber. I know it will be either 6.5x47, .260, or 6.5x55 (in that order?)
Your rifle looks exceptional, please, more details!

Well--still no bucks for me--just set out at our ranch near San Angelo for 2 days---I might just chalk this one up for the year--I think its time for me to go spank a Nilgai for some more meat--in the next couple of weeks!!! Maybe next year for my monster Whitetail buck--it keeps me going!!!
