I am going to build one but need some inspirations. If you have a Savage cartridge on a mauser action I'd like to see it. Mine is going to be a 300 Savage on a 1909 Argy action. Adam

Built a few, no pics however. Seems that the 1909 is more action than needed.

Except for a Small Ring Mexican 98 all the builds I did were on small ring actions. Pressures and size were about perfect for the actions. Last I did was on a 94 Brazilian.

Mate it to a nice thin, schnabel stock and have fun.

If I were to do a 300 Savage Mauser, I would use an intermediate 98 and save the '09 for another project.

My 250 Savage is built on a Peruvian. Jim Kobe stocked it and am waiting on the rust blue. I hope to have it back in the month of June. Seems the magazine box on the Wiebe bottom metal was bought semi finished and then cut for the Peruvian with the 250 cartridge. If you need photos send me an email.

Butch, you're 100% correct, big bite. But life's to short to think about what I might be to do, I want to know I can do. I figure if I can work with a few old 93 Mausers and make them work I would feel comfortable to work with the 1909 I have stashed away. I figure it'll make a good project when I head off to the PA School of Gunsmithing in November. Adam

If I was going to all that trouble to make a compact Savage, I would start with a small thread action, like the 09 Peruvian mentioned. Or maybe better yet, an 03 Turk, just in case it didn't work out...

Of course, starting with something you don't want to mess up is often good motivation to do it right.

That shortened Mauser is a completely different animal that your initial post suggested you had in mind for the 1909.

I want a short1909, but first I want to use the $30 96'S I bought. I figure that's the best way to do it. Then once I have that down I figure the 1909 will come into play. I may even have to stay at a Holiday Inn to accomplish all of this. I figure it'll take two recievers to figure out all of the kinks. I was just hoping to see some good looking 300 Sav Mausers so I could get an idea of the final product, even if they were long ones. Adam

Rather than looking for good looking .300 Savages you should instead broaden your search for good looking Mausers. A good looking 7x57 would be every bit as good looking if it were a .300.

One of those 96's would make a superb little .300 S.

For inspiration, you might look to the Savage 1920.

The 1920 is what got this where it is. I saw my first one just few weeks ago and that was it, I need one or one similar. I don't like a few of the features of the 20' so I figure the best way to go about this is to make my own. I head off to school in Nov so I'll have some progress reports by the first of the year if permitable. Adam
