Very sad news indeed! One of the best gunmakers of our time and an even better man. Prayers for the family in this difficult time.

That is sad news. Condolences to his family and friends.

Folks should take the time to listen to Reto Buehler’s podcast interview with him.

I have always admired his work and was impressed with his rifles. Condolences to his family and friends and may he rest in peace.

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
- Rudyard Kipling

A tiny snippet in Steve's life, but shows the immensity of character and courage and humor

Ravages of wheelchair was plenty, but about a year ago, an outrageous infection was found in one leg. Daily infusions of antibiotics seemed ineffective to the point of considering amputation.

When he told me the story, must have been an awkward silence...He picked up on that and casually proclaimed " Well, Duane, I really don't use my leg much anyway"!....What a guy!

RIP Mr Heilmann - an extraordinary, yet humble gunmaker, stockmaker and one of the best blank traders.

From personal experience, as a man he was more remarkable yet.

Salute.

Steve's demise left me speechless. He was always of good cheer and made his exceptional craftsmanship look easy, although we only had a clue how difficult it must have been.
RIP friend Steve~

I had the chance to see a lot of Steve'a work in Darwin Hensleys shop. The quality of his work was always beyond reproach. My condolences to his family and friends.

Steve was one of the finest gunmakers of anytime. He built a breath-taking 280 Remington on a VZ33 action for my brother many years ago, which Gary Goudy stocked flawlessly.

Steve was highly respected by every gunmaker that I know, and there are quite a few. I am sorry to hear of his passing.

An artist, in the truest sense.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
